So the wife and I have been watching a drunken Andy Griffith Netflix marathon all day. Funny how after all this time, the show still holds up. Don Knotts was nothing less than a comedic genius.

Anyone else like it? I think my favorite episode was the haunted house one. Anyone else have a favorite episode?

The one where Barney starts a rescue for Andy when he thinks Andy is stuck in a cave-in with Helen... Andy's ok, but when he realizes Barney will get goofed on, he goes back into the cave to pretend to be rescued.

LOVE the show and couldn't agree more about how well it holds up! Don Knotts WAS a comic genius and won five well-deserved Emmys for the show. I read somewhere that Woody Allen idolized Knotts and modeled his standards for comic acting after him. Allen thought Knotts was amazing in that he NEVER broke character for even a second--he said that if you watch him while other actors are speaking/emoting/whatever, he's always completely engaged and in the moment, no matter how small that moment is. Allen is right. Anyhow, I thought that was interesting!

If I had to pick a favorite episode, it's "Opie The Birdman." It's got pretty much everything--fine performances by all involved (Ron Howard was a great little actor!), a simple but extremely touching story, and a bittersweet but uplifting ending. I get a little choked up every time.

Also like The Pickle episode, Mr. McBeevey with Buddy Ebsen, and the Haunted House one you mention.

TAGS is one of the best shows ever.

Yes--that one, too! Andy was always looking out for Barney's feelings, knowing that under all that bluster, "Barn" was a sweet man at heart!

It's funny you brought up that show today ... I was just thinking about the Andy Griffith Movie "A Face In The Crowd" -- Really good film if you haven't seen it, and Andy's on fire in it.

Andy is EXCELLENT in that movie, which was ahead of its time! He should have been nominated, he was that good.

I like it because it brings back memories from when I was a kid and watching it with my grampa.

You chose a great picture, too! TAGS was never quite as good after Don Knotts left--Griffith loved working with/bouncing off the guy and it showed.

I've always felt that the show was barely worth watching after Knotts left. The chemistry between Knotts and Andy was something special, and when it was gone, it was gone.

A couple of months ago, we went to Hollywood and found Don Knotts' grave. Check out this marker.

This one comes to mind. Escaped female convicts take Barney and Floyd hostage.

    That is awesome!

Yeah, Andy Griffith played Andy Taylor differently after Knotts left...he slowly became somehow angrier and snappish, not at all like the Andy of seasons 1-5. As you point out, the chemistry they had was irreplaceable.

Great call--one of the best! Barney, dancing with the broad convict: "You bring something...OUT IN ME!"

ETA: "You're beginning to get *to* me!"

He was! Floyd was also really good in the one where he answers a lonely hearts ad, pretends to be rich, and the gold-digger comes to meet him. Andy acting as his son and Aunt Bee his maid was great. Then Opie strolls in and Andy says oh that's my younger brother. :snicker:

ETA: The country club one was classic also--when they say they've accepted one of them and Barney assumes it's himself and not Andy, and he feels bad for Andy...

I liked that they kept calling him Al, and even Floyd got in on the act and called him Al. I generally don't care for Floyd, but he was pretty funny in that episode.
