i used to do vipassana (a.k.a., insight) meditation quite a bit but i stopped my meditation practice when i got too busy because of that test i took last october. now i'm starting back up again. doing two weeks of body scan meditation to start with using jon kabat-zinn's series. i've done it three days now (45 minutes each day) and it's fucking crazy where it puts my mind and awareness. i luff it.

    you meditate?

insight meditation comes from a buddhist tradition and is based on the idea of impermanence (e.g., everything is constantly changing, nothing is the same from moment to moment) and taht we need to stop fighting change and impermanence and accept things as they are, in the moment, with awareness of the moment and without judgment.

body scan meditation is a guided meditation where you focus awareness of various parts of your body over the course of anywhere from 25 to 45 minutes (the program i'm using is 45 minutes). by the time i'm about halfway through, my body is so relaxed and my mind is so calm. i can't even explain how it feels. you're not supposed to judge, but if i were asked to, i'd judge it as being awesome.

to start, you commit to doing the body scan -- the same one -- daily for 45 minutes for two weeks. shoot me a pm with your email if you're interested.

howard does transcendental meditation. this is insight meditation. it's different and you don't spend your time "thinking about yourself." you spend it being aware of the moment without judgment.

Tried. Want to. Can't seem to block things out. Which makes me angry. See the vicious cycle?

it's ok if you can't block things out. just stick with it and don't judge yourself for not being able to block them out. accept your mind wandered and refocus as much/often as necessary. two weeks of this body scan and i bet you have a different experience. just commit to 2 weeks, 45 mins a day.

totally. you realize it's 2013 and not 1982, right?

i meditate in my underwear usually.

depends. i been taking a break from porridge, btw. mostly eating egg white omelets with tomatoes and monterey jack cheese for breakfast lately. i put a little tarragon in the eggs, too. delish.
