"Fiber Optic" would be a good name for a black stripper.

My brother owns a communications company, they deal with fiber optics daily. I can run some questions by him if no one else here can help.

Dial tone is not a growth industry. Data is growing like Chriza's belly at lunchtime.

Fusion splicers dont come cheap, it's all in the set up, the machine does all the work. I enjoy splicing fiber, ribbons, singles doesn't matter to me, but I also dont pay for equip or supplies. Telcom industry sucks balls I wouldn't recommend working for the telcos .

I see guys that work running Fiber Optic cables on ships. Companies like L-3 and Serco.

Looks like tough work. The shit is super fragile, and everyone gets yelled at for stepping on it.

the the industry is right on the cusp of moving into cloud big-time. i figure it will change all the rules regarding cable, fibre and how servers connect. i bet on-demand is attempted again too.

doing the terminations and splices is involved: you have to be able to use the tools to properly polish the ends, and seal the connections too. the tools alone are high ticket items so they want highly trained and expereinced workers.
