It's supposedly a magic over-the-counter dietary supplement that makes you sleep better and fell better all day. A friend of mine was talking about it. It sounds too good to be true but I'm intrigued. Anyone of you ever tried it?

i haven't tried it (cause i don't have issues sleeping) but from what i read it makes sense that it would help. You know how the chemical tryptophan in turkey is what makes you feel like sleeping after eating thanksgiving dinner? well that happens because tryptophan is converted into serotonin and melatonin (both make you feel good and relaxed). 5-htp is oxitriptan, which is converted into tryptophan and is also active in the conversion to serotonin and melatonin.

it makes you feel good and relaxed. it seems to be in a similar class to things like st. john's wort in that it is used to treat conditions where you don't feel good and relaxed, like anxiety and depression.

if i want the effects of tryptophan, i don't go looking for pills; i eat turkey, and maybe some mashed potatoes and gravy. and some cranberries (cause its not right to have the turkey dry).

There's not enough tryptophan in Turkey to have any effect on you. Any good feeling you get from it is because it's yummy.

I've tried it - I don't recommend that you start w/200, however - try finding 50 m. capsules and start there. Unfortunately I found that it still didn't help me sleep - only thing that seems to work for me is ZZZ-quill.

yeah, I tried it too. I didn't notice a difference, but I'm a tough case. I need hardcore scripts to help me sleep in addition to the OTC stuff. At night I take melatonin, magnesium, benadryl, trazodone and klonopin.

Z-quil is diphenhydramine, same thing as benadryl. Total rip-off. You can buy a huge bottle of generic benadryl that will last you a year for the same price as one bottle of that z-quil. Took me years to figure that out.

I am aware of that, actually; and I still find that ZZ-quill liquid works best.

I guess the liquid form can get absorbed faster.
