At the time Howard got fired from NBC and went to KROC, there's no question he and Don both put maximum care into building Howard's career. And they both got rich. Since Private Parts, though, it seems Howard has just done one thing after another to ruin his brand. Eg. his failed TV, movie and comics projects in the early 2000s; eg. the canceled CBS show that he put zero effort into...

During this time, Don still managed to negotiate the $500 million Sirius deal. Afterward, how does Howard repay him? By sabotaging the whole radio show. At Sirius, Howard could have started a fresh, rewarding chapter of his career. With so much money and no creative limitations (from advertisers or the FCC), he could have done a lot of interesting radio that would've made his fans and peers respect him even more...

Instead, we all know Howard chose to dedicate the least amount of money, time, creativity or intelligence to the Sirius show. Consequently, it devolved into garbage, even at a time when his fans were being asked to pay for the privilege of listening. Maybe Don looked at the situation and thought: "Howard is the talent who built this show. If he wants to slow down and enjoy his personal life, that's his prerogative. I still profited enormously from working with him..."

But the way everything has gone the last few years, how could Don not feel Howard was letting him down? Making Don assume the responsibility of promoting all Beth's tacky ventures, ignoring his professional advice not to do AGT, involving him in the frivolous $300 million Sirius lawsuit, etc. All the crap with NSAL, asking hardworking fans for money and then giving nothing but abysmal radio content in return... Howard has spent five years thoughtlessly destroying the A-list brand that Don took at least a couple of decades to engineer for him.

Despite the amazing financial benefits of partnering with Howard, wouldn't you resent somebody who suddenly stopped doing any of the heavy lifting in your professional relationship... and then started piling extra burdens onto the relationship (like a fame-hungry wife, whose ambitions are all completely toxic to the "intelligent outsider" nature of Howard's brand)?

Other than the dollar figures that keep them working together, you would think Don must have very little personal respect left for Howard anymore. He probably has to push a lot of disgusted, disappointment feelings out of his mind, before sitting down to interact with Howard on any professional basis...

Why would he resent Howard? why would even give a shit at this point? through Howard he became a multi-millionaire. He has no other noteworthy clients, if it wasn't for Howard he would be poor.

That is not true. They are considered one of the big-5 commercial agencies in NYC.
He woulds be a multimillionaire without a cent from Stern

Stern has been hyping overtly and clandestinely other Buchwald client for 30 years!
Don feels the polar opposite of resent toward Howard.

I'm no math major, but 10% of $900,000,000 is $90,000,000 - and that comes right off the top.

Plus all the other side deals and bonuses he wrote into the contracts.

    Resent away!

He is really disappointed with Howard. Just alone from his first Sirius contract $50 million. I'd hate the guy too. Trash

Buchwald has become a XM Sirius parasite. On the $300 million suit Stern sneakily brought against the company in a grab for money he clearly was not entitled to soon after re-signing and collecting a $25mil bonus, Buchwald was to also receive $30Million above and beyond that? What the fuck did he do to help grow the network? What did he do to help facilitate the merger? Why, in an entertainment universe where the agent receives a fixed percentage of the star's earnings, why the fuck should XM Sirius pay him anything, let alone $30Mil out of their own pocket, even if this ridiculous suit wasn't bitch-slapped by two courts?

When celebs make that much, the agent % goes down.
But DBA has woven into the contracts that he gets a 10% cut paid for by the company.
    Smart fucking businessman

It's "investment spending" of course, but you know that as a free-standing client profit center, he's actually losing a shitload of money on YokO'strosky

In some crazy way I wonder if Howard's made Buchwald's life a little easier----he doesn't have to worry anymore about what kind of crazy "trouble" Howard's going to get himself into next. His client isn't fartman anymore. He's hobnobbing with the likes of harvey weinstein, barbara walters, katie couric, billy joel, etc. (granted, many of them probably mock howard behind his back, but.....) He's kissing the ass of people like Lena Dunham. He's on a FAMILY show on NBC. I would think it would be easier to sell Howard as he is now.

I sure would love to know what he REALLY thinks of Beth though.

It all depends of whether Buchwald really cares about his work. In the beginning, he was helping to create one of the most notable entertainers in history. The multimillions were gravy for a job well done.

Now, as OP has pointed out, he's been relegated to cleaning out the stables (so to speak)

The work he's doing now cannot be rewarding work. Beth and Howard are oblivious to how ridiculous they've become. Buchwald has to keep a straight face and execute that work. He's probably extremely loyal to Howard and continues on.

But I do see a "fuck it all!!" and retirement in his future. It will, no doubt, involve something Beth related. Buchwald signed on to make Howard famous, not his airhead wife.
