ATLANTIC CITY, N.J.—The contractor who provided the onion domes for Donald Trump’s Taj Mahal casino had to eat $2 million (U.S.) in losses. The contractor who supplied the Carrara marble from Italy ended up filing for personal bankruptcy. The contractor who put in the bathroom partitions had to lay off his brother.

A quarter of a century has passed since Trump refused to pay in full 253 contractors who help build his Taj in Atlantic City. But for many of them, it could have happened yesterday.

“We got next to nothing,” said Michael MacLeod, whose 40-person studio made the giant elephant statues at the casino’s entrance. “I took a big hit.”

After the Taj opened in April 1990, the self-anointed “King of Debt” owed $70 million to contractors employing thousands who built the domes and minarets, put up the glass and drywall, laid the pipes and installed everything from chandeliers to bathroom fixtures.

A year later, when the casino collapsed into bankruptcy, those owed the most got only 33 cents in cash for each dollar owed, with promises of another 50 cents later. It took years to get the rest, assuming the companies survived long enough to collect.

In fairness to Trump and I'm no fan of his but everything from 15-20 years ago has failed in Atlantic City, The place is a dump and alot of forms of gambling has become legal in alot of the states near AC.

AC was hammered by legalized gambling in PA. They also built a project right down the street from the casinos. Why travel through the ghetto of AC when you can gamble in PA

The Taj Poker room was fantastic.

It has killed the horse racing industry in NJ also. AC cock blocking racinos at the Meadowlands and in Freehold led to the purses at both tracks falling behind PA and NY. With diminishing incentive for NJ Bred horses, huge breeding farms are going out of biddness, costing tons of jobs.

The Borgata is the only casino in Atlantic City that isn't a complete shit hole.

The Taj Mahal is still open. I never stayed there but it seemed okay. I am in North Jersey about 2-1/2 hours from AC. The casinos in PA are an hour closer. I have to go check them out one of these weekends. I feel like it will be like the casinos in CT. There is something about AC. All those casinos lined up on the beach. I love it!

I feel the same way about Vegas.

There are Indian Casinos a hell of a lot closer to me but, I just love to be in Vegas.

    It's a vibe.

It's big, and loud, and crazy.
