fantastic Geo---did you watch Frozen Planet? The "Making of" was mind bending---the time and effort that goes into these shots and films, remarkable

I was thinking the same thing, you can do cool things with an intervalometer on your camera.

Just an FYI....an intervalometer is essentially a time lapse device, which will take a series of pics at a given interval, whereas a 3 hour exposure is a single frame being exposed for 3 hours

Yes, but I thought you can set an intervalometer to keep the lens open for a determined amount of time in addition to taking several timed shots?

What is? The intervalometer or can you set the camera to a 3 hour exposure?

You can set most pro cameras for long exposure times. The only thing we ever used an intervalometer for was time lapse, but you may be right and they can also be used to keep the lens open for a determined length of time....I'm not sure about that

I have one (an intervalometer) and that is a part of what it can do, but I have not yet fooled with it enough to know. I wanted to take some cool pics of the huge moon last weekend, but it was too cloudy.

It will take some playing with, because with exposures that long you're essentially throwing away all your stops and letting what's there be there with no adjustments, so any light changes of much degree will fork everything up

Tell me about it, I tried and tried, but gave up for a bit for that exact reason, and you do not even need a lot of light to mess things up either.
