    Story highlights
(CNN)"Saturday Night Live's" 40th season went out with a bang, no doubt about it.

Host Louis C.K. is no stranger to edgy comedy -- as seen on his critically acclaimed FX series "Louie" -- and his nine-minute monologue shocked some on social media.

The comedian remarked on his experiences growing up in the 1970s, first pointing out that no one was offended by racist language at that time (and admitting to his "mild racism" today). Then he got a few groans from the audience once he started delving into the topic of child molesters.

He said that the child molester living down the street was not a big deal to most people at the time.

"Child molesters are very tenacious people," he noted, pointing out the fate of those who are caught doing it.

"From their point of view, it must be amazing to risk so much!"

Many in the audience sounded shocked by this point in the monologue and he was aware that the joke didn't go over well.

It's far from the first "SNL" monologue to cause controversy: Martin Lawrence'sfrom 1993 was considered so offensive, it was never replayed again

Opinions on Twitter were sharply mixed.

"That Louis CK monologue was not only terrible, it was actually offensive!" said Cindy Wrightson.

"BryanBe" was "stunned" that NBC allowed him to say it.

Louis CK probably just said the funniest, yet most offensive, line in tv history. I'm stunned that nbc allowed it. #SNL

Ken Shi, on the other hand, said that those who were offended "really have no sense of humour."

People who think Louis CK was offensive on #snl really have no sense of humour and are way too easily offended

The episode also went close to the edge when C.K.'s character in one sketch imitated Leslie Jones' voice.

Former "SNL" star Chris Kattan remarked that he wrote a similar sketch and "when I did African-American voice they said 'too offensive.' Now I'm confused."

I wrote a sketch similar to a #LouisCK sketch on #SNL40Finale when I did African-American voice they said 'too offensive.' Now I'm confused

I struggled to get through that, not because it was racist or offensive, it's just that it wasn't funny.

In fact, I really didn't hear anything offensive in that monologue.

I don't know what they are up in arms about.

It wasn't really funny. Not because it was offensive -- because it wasn't funny.

I give him props for pushing some buttons, but he'll lose them if he caves to pressure and appilogizes tomorrow. I'd really become a fan if he holds a news conference just to say "Fuck you, I'm a comedian you stupid retards!'

Louis has always talked about how absurdly easily people are offended. I remember a bit he did on Conan in the mid-90s where the gist was how simply saying the words "Blacks" and "Jews" isn't technically racist (as intent is everything) and he demonstrated by standing up and just shouting "Blacks and Jews!!" over and over again. It was funny and it was true.

Talking in a "black voice" and pretending to empathize with child molesters is surely more shocking than funny, but is it really offensive? I think it's part of his grand scheme to make that point from the highest available pulpit to the largest amount of people.

If the audience of Saturday Night Live is offended by something a comedian does on a late night comedy show, then we are fucked as a civilization, not evolved.

As much as I believe that Louis C.K. is pretty massively overrated, there was nothing in that monologue for a reasonable person to get all butthurt over.

Yes, child molestation is looked upon very harshly by our society at present, but just give the secular humanist progressives some time. Although LBGT issues are pretty much dominating their focus at present - and polygamy and incest are lining up to be the next items on their agenda - it's a dead lock cinch that they will eventually set their sights on destigmatizing some forms of child sex.
