Elton John joined Ed Sheeran on the Grammy telecast in February 2013, lending his considerable star power to a performance of Sheeran’s breakthrough hit, “The A Team.” Neither man could have known it at the time, but Sheeran would one day break Elton’s long-held record as the Englishman with the longest run at #1 on the U.K.’s Official Albums Chart.

It happened on Sunday as Sheeran’s sophomore album, x, logged its 12th week at #1 on that chart. Elton’s hit-studded Greatest Hits album spent 11 weeks on top in 1974-‘75.

Only three other albums by male solo artists have spent 12 or more weeks at #1 in the U.K. since the chart originated in July 1956. All three are by American artists. Elvis Presley's G.I. Blues soundtrack logged 22 weeks on top in 1961. Elvis’ Blue Hawaii soundtrack spent 18 weeks on top in 1962. Bob Dylan's John Wesley Harding spent 13 weeks on top in 1968.

The Fine Print: The Summer Holiday soundtrack spent 14 weeks at #1 in 1963. But the album was credited to Cliff Richard & The Shadows, so it wasn’t an album by a male solo artist.

x has also done very well in the U.S. The album debuted at #1 on The Billboard 200 in June. x has spawned three top 20 hits on the Hot 100: “Sing,” “Don’t” and “Thinking Out Loud.” Each hit has climbed higher on the chart than the one before it.

x is a Grammy finalist for Album of the Year. It’s Sheeran’s first album to receive this acknowledgement. Three Elton albums—1970s’s Elton John, 1974’s Caribou and 1975’s Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy—were nominated in that marquee category: None of them won.

I actually dig Ed. He reminds me a lot of John Waite - who happens to be my favorite vocalist...

Oddly enough Mariah Carey is the only one that has come close to breaking any Beatles records.

I find it hard to believe Ed Sheeran is beating an Elton John record.

that part is odd but Mariah Carey had countless #1 hits. Hell i admit it, i like a lot of her songs, she really is a great singer.
