Mandarich #20? That dude deflated like a bad spare tire.
I wasn't alive when he got hit
but his story always has amazed me ---sad really
the dude could hit a fucking ball
What in the hell is "Could have been" about JaMarcus Russell, Vince Young, Matt Leinart, Akili Smith, and Ryan Leaf. They got to the NFL and we all saw that they simply could not play at that level...
I'm guessing the factor being how high they went in the NFL draft rather then being 5th or 6th
round picks and being NFL busts or never have beens.
I would put Marcus Dupree on the list and end it right there. That guy was a once in a lifetime talent that went to waste.
How'd they miss Len Bias? Or is everyone at ESPN born after 1990?
Ryan Leaf #4??
For the premise of this story to be realistic, the athlete would need to have so much talent in the first place. Leaf was an overrated college "system" quarterback from a Pac-10 school that half the country never seen play due to west coast games being on so late at night on the east coast.
Charger fans, show us your lightning bolt!!
I'm sure they didn't miss him; I guess they just decided that dying doesn't count.
Bosworth and Mandarich were steroid creations. Marinovich got everything he could out of limited talent. Prior should definitely be up there. Eric Davis had a few good years but could have been one of the all-time greats.
Washington State "system" QB? Leaf took his team to the Rose Bowl with the school that continually has the worst recruiting classes in the Pac-10. Dude was no joke physically and I think the combine numbers support this. Unfortunately, he had a $2 pea brain, not to mention not much of a work ethic to succeed in the NFL. Plus, who knows if he took steroids in college and stopped when they have stricter testing in the NFL?
Tony Conigliaro had a good career until he got beaned by a pitch. He wasn't a bust.
Who are Brien Taylor and Matt Bush? Also, ESPN is busy editing out Curt Schilling from their World Series highlights because he put a meme on his Facebook account. Aaron Hernandez murdered at least one person, that we know of, and they put him on this list? Gee, maybe including Hernandez is a little insensitive to his victim's families.
It wasn't his fault but how about the fact Charlie Ward was never given a chance to be a QB in the NFL. When asked who the best QB in the 1994 NFL draft Johnson said something like, "He plays for the Knicks".
@HowieStearn GO NOLES!!!!!
I worked the local TV broadcasts of Cougar football during their Rose Bowl season in 1997. None of the home games were played at night that year, and only two of WSU's road games were. The national media, as usual, had it's tongue too far up the Big Ten and SEC's ass.
Where is Lawrence Phillips... oh yea dead too.
I stand corrected, thank you sir!!
Taylor and Bush were first pick in the draft guys in baseball that fell apart for various reasons.
Neither could carry Todd Van Poppels jock in terms of raw talent that flamed out at the MLB level.
