Every so often, I hear a song that gets stuck in my head for days, maybe even weeks. It's like I hear it playing on a continual loop and can't shut it off. I'll often go through the day humming it or tapping out the rhythm as it plays in my mind. Sometimes it can be helpful, as I've always been pretty decent at playing guitar or piano by ear, but after a few days of the loop, it starts annoying the shit out of me. I never know what song will trigger this either, so I don't know how to avoid it.

As of now, I've been hearing Elvis sing "American Trilogy" from the Aloha album for over a week. It's a great song, but it's driving me nuts. Maybe it's appropriate since it's almost 4th of July.

Anyone else get this? Am I mental?

It happens all the time to me. Right now, I have "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" playing in my head- I don't think I'll be sleeping well tonight.

Lol. That's definitely the kind of song that would get stuck in my head.

I get it with a lot of shitty songs that I fucking hate.

This combined with my penchant to hum melodies 4/5ths through and stop the hum right before the melody resolves is going to lead to some madness eventually. It's just so delightfully disarming.

It happens to me constantly, but after many years I developed a response to this lunacy that strangely helps me. What I do is have a back up song or go to song when that shit happens. Sometimes it is one of my favorite songs, (light my fire, 1985, memory of liz reed) ...anything to stop the "loop" of the other song and the interruption really helps stop it. The funny stuff is sometimes I will remember a really asshole song that is horrible but really funny like "76 trombones led the big parade" I start laughing at how this song ever got made from the 'music man' and that stops the 'loop' of the other one.

If a song is stuck in your head, try to remember the whole thing and sing it to the end. The brain has an intrinsic desire to complete and a lot of people can get a song out of their head if they get to the end.
