I "adopted" a kid from Guatemala yrs ago..send the family money every month...I am gratified when I receive letters about how well he and his family are doing.

and of course, I 've done my share in helping put my liquor store owner's children thru college - so there's that too.:D

Are there people, (aside from the obvious proud parents around here) who have intervened to make your life better, or actively steered it in a more constructive direction?

Or do you think you perhaps have made a difference in someone else's life?

    And how so?

    I'm not a braggart :nono:

I do my fair share though. And have been helped myself... Those in my life know that it's cool to put their weight on me, whenever.

I sincerely hope I made positive difference in the boys I fostered. I still keep in touch with them (the oldest was over last weekend to hang out with one of my sons)

I did the same with a girl from Ethiopia. Her name is Bethlehem. I've given monthly since she was born. She has written several letters every year, sent pictures, etc. She just turned 18 and has grown into a nice young lady.

As far as people making a difference in my life- I try and spend as much time as I can with older people just listening. I think of many as mentors and they have really helped me remember my place in this world.

Aw, Harlock! You make a difference in MY life, and I'm being totally serious! You, and the rest of my Shed buddies, make me laugh on a daily basis. That might sound small, but if you knew the fuckstorm that I have going on IRL, you'd see it's a pretty big thing.

Sometimes the smallest gestures can have a big impact on someone.

    Example,
I was having a not so great day. One of those where everything seems to go wrong. I was at the cheese counter at my local Farmers Market. My arms were full and the cheese guy asked me if I'd like him to get me a cart. The carts were way at the other end of the market , so I thanked him and said for him not to go to the trouble, I'd do it. But he insisted and left the counter and got me a cart.
Just a simple gesture, but he brightened the rest of my day for me. And he made me feel special.

I don't know if I always succeed, but I try to do little things hoping to brighten someone's day.

I like to think I've made a difference in the lives of my students. I've been a teacher for nearly 25 years now, most of those in the poorest, most dangerous ghetto in our city. I know that for some of my "babies," I will probably be the only one who hugs them each day, or says a kind word to them, or makes them feel special. At least that's what I try to do.

There's nothing better than the feeling I get when I run into a former student, years later, when (s)he is an adult, and they tell me I was always their favorite teacher. It lets me know I made a difference in their life, at least.
