in high school we used to smoke joints and freak ourselves out in an abandoned mental hospital. (it sounds cliché but they do exist). it used to exist anyway, now it's a golf course. that place was creepy

My dad used to have an abandoned factory behind his house. We used to go in there and mess around. The really fun part, though, was throwing rocks and busting out the windows. Ah, memories.

I don't do it, but there is a livejournal community where folks post pictures of places: http://abandonedplaces.livejournal.com/

You should probably make sure your tetanus shot is up to date

That's awesome! Find anything cool in there? That's the kind of place I'd like to check out.

A buddy and I once snuck aboard what had at one time been the USS Cabildo, an old LSD that the Navy was then using as a target ship. Probably not the smartest thing to have done in retrospect, but you're only young once and it was a memorable adventure.

I'm not sure about the potential penalties for trespassing - perhaps it varies at different locations. Better to ask forgiveness than permission! If someone were to visit an abandon place of interest, i'd suggest doing a reasonable amount of online research first (does the location have 24 hour maned or cctv security, stability of the building - especially stairs, etc.), don't go alone, wear thick sole boots, good flashlight(s), take only pictures - lots, and upload after every so many pictures, in case security wants you to delete your picts if you get caught. Let friends that aren't going with you, know exactly where you're going and a general time when you expect your adventure to be finished. Lots of great websites devoted to the exploration of abandoned places. Good luck and be safe!!

Here's a few good sites detailing a very cool adventure a few guys experienced exploring mothballed ships in Suisun Bay (SF Bay Area):

Take a look at the other exploration sites listed on the left side margin -

Doesn't Howard Stern's sister take pictures of abandoned places?

We used to trash the shit out of this old motel down the cape called white cliffs . Years later they took it down and put housing there . That sucked. By that time I was over 18 so if I got caught trashing the place I would have been fucked.
We also used to trash a camp called camp Clark down the cape for a few years when that was closed. We would take chicks to the cabins and fuck . Good times .

There was an old Nike missile base in south jersey we would break into and skateboard in the underground base.

Not exactly what your talking about, but in high school, me and my friend discovered that underneath the school was a forgotten air raid shelter. It was clear nobody had been down there in decades. Not even sure the priceable knew it existed. There weren't even concrete floors -- all dirt. We also found rows and rows of barrels which were marked "Water" and "Crackers". It was then we realized this was built in case we got nuked. Glad we didn't because I can't think of a more dreary place dying of radiation poisoning.

My friend and I eventually told our Film/Art teacher about it and we ended up making a student film comedy down there on Super 8. Sure would love to see the movie today!

In college we went to an abandoned mental hospital. The place was creepy as hell and there was medical records on the floor.

I don't recall any barrels marked "Soylent Green", so I'm gonna have to go with no.
