My son & I were talking about the Dodgers this morning and he found the below on Wiki. I wonder if they were pelted with batteries and eggs during the time they were called "The Bridegrooms"? Might be one of the worst names in sports history, up there with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

    · Los Angeles Dodgers (1958–present)

    · Brooklyn Dodgers (19321957)*

    · Brooklyn Robins (19141931)

    · Brooklyn Superbas (1913)

    · Brooklyn Trolley Dodgers (19111912)

    · Brooklyn Superbas (18991910)

    · Brooklyn Bridegrooms (18961898)

    · Brooklyn Grooms (18911895)

    · Brooklyn Bridegrooms (18881890)

    · Brooklyn Grays (18851887)

    · Brooklyn Atlantics (1884)

*(1932 is the first year in which the nickname appeared on the uniforms of the Brooklyn Base Ball Club).

That would be when Disney named their new professional hockey team after their low budget kids movie.:facepalm::facepalm:

The Yankees started out life as the Baltimore Orioles in 1901. They moved to NY in 1903 to join the new American League. Since they played in upper Manhattan in a field called Hilltop Park, they were called the Highlanders. They shortly thereafter moved to the Polo Grounds and shared a field with the NY Giants. After World War 1 broke out, ownership changed the team's name to the more patriotic "Yankees". After the team acquired Babe Ruth and started to outdraw the Giants, Giants ownership kicked the Yankees out of the Polo Grounds. Colonel Ruppert, the beer magnate, was royally pissed off and decided to build his own stadium within sight of the Polo Grounds. He bought a parcel of land in the Bronx, which was very bucolic then, directly across the Harlem River from the Polo Grounds, and built the grand structure known as the first Yankee Stadium. The two ballparks were in view of each other until the Polo Grounds were torn down in the mid 1960s, after the Mets had moved to Shea a Stadium. The current Yankee Stadium is across East 161st Street from the first stadium's site.
