Some real scum bag(s) broke into an older family friends house... took
a bunch of small things Apple TV, jewels, medicine, sentimental shit

My friend lives in a nice gated community too...
I am going to set up a CCTV system like the one I use at my house were I records 24 hrs a day
and I can live view on my phone....

an alarm system is going up but it is debatable if monitoring would make a difference.. the cop that
came out said to just get one that makes a ton of noise

anyone here have ADT or any other monitoring and how do you like it?

as a side note i discovered that you can view the last 5 devices that used your Netflix account
and since my account is active on that apple tv... (I deactivated everything BUT Netflix...)
if the burglar is stupid enough to go on Netflix even for a second on that device I will know and
have their IP Address... its a long, long shot but who knows

The best alarm system which ADT won't install is one that blasts a high decibel alarm inside and outside. When I used ADT years ago in another state they said no outside alarms. They would blast noise on false alarms. Even if thieves can knock out the horn inside your house they can't do anything to the one outside if it is elevated. No one is going to hang around as every neighbor who is being disturbed comes outside to see where the alarm is coming from. I guess some thieves are good enough to cut off the power to your property but most aren't. You don't even need a monitoring system. Once a door is open or a window broken the thieves are going to hit the road if the alarm is going off.

I watch someone's cottage in the off season and he has a "Guardzilla". It's just a camera with a microphone and speaker so I can actually talk to him in the house when he's a couple thousand miles away. So, if someone's in your house you can yell "I'm coming downstairs with my gun!".

I used to until I realized this
First they call your house when the alarm goes off. So there's 3 minutes
Then they call a backup number to see if they know what's up that's another 3
After that they call the cops so there's 10 minutes
So after like 15 minutes some one is gonna show up at your house. In most instances they will be gone by then.
Total waste of money fear mongering sales

If I lived in a shady part of Portland perhaps but the stattistical odds of getting robbed like that are really low
32 bucks a month too, just buy a cheap door alarm or something

Forget monitoring, get an audible alarm and set up something like a Nest Cam. The Nest Cam is great since it alerts your smartphone if activity is detected, has night vision abilities and lets you talk to the camera through your phone. I like scaring my bull dog when I see him on the couch! :giggle:

The noise and a sign that you have one is really the only deterrent. Your choice of a self monitored system is better imo.

I have ADT and they are complete shit. Shit equipment, shit service, over priced, greedy cock suckers. You're guaranteed a letter every year telling you the price is going up. I tell them to fuck off every year.

Gated community? Probably one of the neighbors' junkie kids, or grand kids if it is a retirement community.

I rely on a solid lighting system and highly visible signs and cameras. The fact that my neighbors are all nosey retirees, and that I live on a dead-end street, helps as well.

I live in the middle of nowhere. My house has deadbolt locks and an alarm system. I have an alarm company sign along my driveway. I keep valuables in my gun safe. I also have a pitbull mix who doesn't like people and sounds ferocious.
There was a show on TV where they asked burglars why they wouldn't break into a house. the number one reason was if they had a dog. they would move along to some other house. Didn't matter what size.

I used to dispatch for an alarm monitoring company and this is 100% true. In 4+ years I never had a single case where the cops got to a home in time to catch the thief. Even in the cases where the homeowners specified that we were to call the PD immediately without calling the premises first, they never got there fast enough to prevent the theft. Police tend to assume alarms at residences are caused by a malfunctioning system or homeowner error and don't treat them with a sense of urgency. If you've had false alarms in the past or if they are short-staffed they often won't respond at all.

Yeah I tend to agree I just wanted to see if anybody actually had positive experience with that company.

I used to install car alarms and stereos in high school for my friends as a hobby, so I am very familiar with security equipment and all that stuff in fact I installed the one in my house and that's been up for years and no problem

2 or 3 times a day I drag rolled up carpeting through my front door and pretend it's kind of heavy. Then I pour bleach on my front porch. No one dares to enter my house.
