I can't stop watching fancy restaurant and cooking videos on youtube.

Do you think Noma and Alinea and all these places can possibly live up to their hype? i'm intrigued by how ridiculously pretentious they are.

how is Nobu? I've got to treat myself to a real fancy meal someday.

I find that fancy restaurants are more likely to throw you out sooner than Applebees.

Noma looks really interesting. I had a friend make a whole trip centered around a reservation there last year. He wasn't disappointed. This is rare though...this place is a one if a kind expression of one guys very interesting food philosophy that all has to do with location. 100% not repeatable by and one else. Look up the show where bordaine (sp?) goes there if you haven't seen it.
Places like nobu I'm sure are good, but isn't that basically a fancy chain restaurant now?

There are 3 in NYC. I have tried 2 of them. The one in midtown is really good. The hudosn street Nobu isn't specatular.
They still beat any sushi place I have tried. Plus there is always great pussy to look at.

Nobu 5th avenue is really really good. Probably best sushi and sashimi I ever ate.

I guess I'm low class, but anytime I go to a really expensive restaurant it seems like the portions are ridiculously small. I feel like saying excuse me sir, when are you bringing the main course?

I have been to dozens of the best restaurants in NYC and around the world really. Like anything else, some were absolutely insane while others were nothing special.

Nobu for example was at one time innovative, but eventually was nothing special and was simply more expensive Americanized-Japanese food that catered to the wall street crowd and stopped giving a fuck (black miso cod anyone?). Now I would absolutely never go there because even though its not expensive by city standards, there is simply no reason to go.

While not the best Japanese I have had outside of Japan, Morimoto's in NYC gives you a far better experience and I found the food to be delicious. It wasn't earth shattering top to bottom, but some of the dishes were really unbelievable and the decor of the place makes for a great experience. It also happens to be across the street from Del Posto a great Italian place. Some people are snobs in both directions. You have people who will only go to fancy restaurants and talk shit about the rest, and other hipster types that will shit on any restaurant with name value. They think the more obscure it is, the better the food is.

If all else fails and you are debating where to go for dinner, then check the Michelin-star guide. I think everyone should experience a 3 star michelin restaurant at least once so they can see what its all about.

I hate the upscale restaurant scene but last year I had dinner in the front room of Gramercy Tavern and it kicked my ass. Thoroughly good and it actually felt sort of unpretentious, for a place of that caliber at least. The bill wasn't even that outrageous either.

i've been to quite a few "fancy" restaurants. after awhile you realize it's just food and as soon as you leave the restaurant the "experience" is over, and what you have to show for it is the same as if you went to a burger king......matter floating in your toilet bowl.
i love good food but don't enjoy the pretentiousness. there are so many good places to eat in NYC, those that survive the competition usually have something extra.
very few exist on reputation alone.

The last time I was in Vegas I was tempted to go to L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon which is his less formal restaurant but still Michelin star quality food(or so they say). The prices were up there but not too bad but no one I was with wanted to go and I didn't want to go there alone. It's all small plates and I could have probably spent over $200 just on the food alone.

Can someone in Manhattan give me the phone number for a good Papa Johns?
