WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Federal Communications Commission is considering whether to punish broadcasters for using the moniker of the Washington NFL team, the Redskins, a word many consider a slur to Native Americans, the agency's chairman indicated on Tuesday.

The FCC, which enforces broadcast indecency violations, has received a petition from legal activist John Banzhaf III, asking that regulators strip local radio station WWXX-FM of its broadcasting license when it comes up for renewal for using the name "Redskins."

Banzhaf says the word is racist, derogatory, profane and hateful, making its use "akin to broadcasting obscenity."

"We'll be looking at that petition, we will be dealing with that issue on the merits and we'll be responding accordingly," FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler told reporters.

"There are a lot of names and descriptions that were used over time that are inappropriate today. And I think the name that is attributed to the Washington football club is one of those," Wheeler added.

The FCC could formally deem use of the team name to be indecent, and thus impose a de facto ban on it on over-the-air television and radio.

Despite protests, vigorous lobbying and even intervention from President Barack Obama, team owner Daniel Snyder has vowed not to change the name of his National Football League team.

Some TV football analysts, including CBS' Phil Simms and Super Bowl-winning coach Tony Dungy, have said they will no longer use the term Redskins. On the other side, former Chicago Bears coach Mike Ditka, a Hall of Famer, says the issue is "so stupid it's appalling."

Half of the U.S. Senate asked the NFL to endorse a name change and the Washington Post editorial board has also said it will stop using the team's name, although it will still be used in the rest of the paper, including the sports section.

In June, a panel of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office canceled the team's trademark registration because it considers its name and logo disparaging. The team has appealed the decision in federal court.

    Prediction:

If they do go through with this waste of time and money, it will mark the first time Howard Stern goes on the air in support of the FCC increasing censorship.

He always comes up with some new surprising way to up the douche ante. This will be the next step in the evolution

Great job, Obama. Way to shit all over the millions of Native Americans who take pride in the fact that their heritage is deemed worthy to be the face of a beloved NFL franchise representing our nation's capital.

That would not be the first time Howard spoke in favor of the FCC increasing censorship. After the move to satellite, multiples times he said he was glad when he read stories of the FCC tightening restrictions because it made satellite that much better and would force people over there. He wasn't ever about freedom. He was always about money for himself. Once he got those people other to satellite, what does he do? Starts censoring and re-cesoring his own show. Now you can't even hear what he was willing to say 5 years ago. They even censor parts of the terrestrial radio stuff. So things the FCC let him say, he wants removed now on satellite.

Anyone catch the beginning of MNF yesterday? For a league having so much trouble with this redskin fiasco they have no trouble pounding the drums as the chiefs! And christian okoye did just that. He danced a bit and slammed a giant Indian drum as the entire stadium did the tomohawk chop. Lots of shots showed fans in full headdress! It was super offensive i tell ya! I can't beleive no one is freaking over that!

If true this would be the first time the FCC rules a specific "ethnic slur" is "indecent". Up until now, only the words from George Carlin's "Seven Dirty Words" routine have been ruled indecent (via the Supreme Court); for all other words the FCC has been ambiguous, siting context, community standards, etc. By the way, whatever they are the FCC does allow indecent words to be broadcast -- but only between 10 PM and 6 AM.
