BIRMINGHAM, AL — He allegedly tracked his girlfriend down to where she was hiding from his abuse, murdered her companions, and kidnapped her and the infant child of one of his deceased victims.

A quintuple homicide Saturday morning in the small city of Citronelle near Mobile, Alabama included a pregnant woman as one of its victims. Derrick Dearman turned himself in to the Greene County Sheriff’s Department, about 20 miles away in Leakesville, Mississippi, for what the county sheriff described as “horrific” slayings connected to a domestic dispute.

Dearman, 28, allegedly tracked his girlfriend, Laneta Lester, 24, to the house where she was staying with five others, including a 3 month-old infant. Lester was staying there to avoid Dearman because, police say, he was abusing her. The house sits on Jim Platt Road, a desolate stretch of Alabama wiregrass about 5 miles from the Mississippi line, in Mobile County but well north of the fresh breeze of the bay. His first visit came just after midnight Saturday, but was cut short by a call to police, however Dearman escaped before authorities arrived on the scene.

He returned a short time later once the scene was all clear, “between 1:15 A.M. and daylight,” according to the sheriff, and that’s when Dearman broke into the house and murdered five occupants, who authorities have now named as Robert Lee Brown, 26, Chelsea Marie Reed (who was five months pregnant), 22, Justin Kaleb Reed, 23, Joseph Adam Turner, 27, and Shannon Melissa Randall, 35.

After allegedly killing the five people, possibly using several different firearms which were recovered at the scene, Dearman is accused of kidnapping his girlfriend along with the infant child of a woman he had just murdered, and forced her to drive to his father’s home in Mississippi, where he released them. The sheriff arrived at the house at 4:45 P.M. Saturday at the request of the Citronelle Police, who were first at the grisly scene after being sought by Lester, the lone adult survivor of the bloodbath. It remains unclear why Dearman released Lester after the alleged slaughter and kidnapping.

According to the sheriff’s office press release, Dearman will be charged with 6 counts of murder, which includes the termination of Reed’s 5-month pregnancy. He’s also been charged with kidnapping.

Authorities say he is cooperating -- that “in the same time frame” in which Lester was reporting Dearman’s assault to Citronelle Police, the suspect was walking into the Greene County Sheriff’s office. He was reportedly accompanied by his father, whose house had been his destination with his two hostages.

The Mobile sheriff has released photos of the victims -- the public affairs officer says they will be using their Twitter account to post updates due to website difficulties. There is already a Youtube conspiracy theory asking “Was it Mind Control?” Beyond the title it is unclear what argument the maker of the video is offering or how the content is in any way related to the titular question.

Dearman’s Facebook page, which was still active as of noon Sunday, became a target for angry posts after he was identified as the suspect in the slayings. Along with general derision -- “sick bastard;” “sick fucking waste of life” -- for his alleged brutal act, comments appeared accusing him of being a thief, posted by Leakesville residents. A message online and a phone call have not been returned by a man who posted in June about Dearman, warning on his Facebook Wall to watch out and “call 9-1-1” if spotted.

The mass-shooting is among the deadliest in the state’s history--although Alabama’s deadliest was only seven years ago. Michael McLendon killed 10 people, including his mother, grandparents, an aunt and uncle, before committing suicide in March 2009 in what is known as the Geneva County Massacre.

Domestic violence is a “serious problem” in Mobile County, according to a January 2014 report that followed three homicides in the county in two separate incidents involving cases of continuing domestic abuse. In the three preceding years, domestic violence accounted for 70% of all the jurisdiction’s reported simple assaults.

Dearman has been interviewed by Mobile County investigators in Greene County, where he remains incarcerated awaiting extradition to Alabama.

Early reports mentioned he used "various tools" but not a gun. I was wondering how one could pull that off with adults. People tend to scatter pretty quick.

Ban neck tattoos and this never happens.

I like how @BethSucks is using this mass murder as an opportunity to defend Muslims and attack Christians

White trash killing white trash. You can usually tell when someone is no good. After seeing the guy, even Stevie Wonder could see he was trouble.
