How come Florida attracts so many crazy people? What causes it? There are plenty of states that also have nice weather and beaches etc, but Florida really seems to be the place where most of the really crazy madness goes down in the entire country.

On a side note, I lived in Florida for a while and I've visited a fair amount of states in the US by now. There's definitely something in the air there. I don't know what, but it's there. I honestly love the place. :jj:

grew up in south florida. its the culture. it really is. its a different mentality down there. everyone is constantly in party mode. marriage doesnt mean anything. its basically a party all the time. if youre not out at a bar, then youre with all your neighbors drinking in the yard. everyone has a pool in their backyard. its tough to sit here and type a good explanation

Some people in the alternative health field think mold makes people go crazy and Florida has a lot of wet weather (therefore mold). My mother moved there almost 6 years ago and Florida is making her crazy too.

My wife lived most of her pre-adult life there near Miami with her family, but she got the fuck out when she graduate college. Anytime there's a news report about something horrible/weird happening, she'll joke it was Florida and 90% she's right.

i think the warm weather attracts a certain type of person. also florida is very diverse raciially, economically, and culturally. drive up to central florida near ocala and there's poverty, SE florida a lot of wealth mixed in with grinding poverty. florida is one big resort which results is a very laid-back vibe, and a huge
recovery" community. also there are a lot of people from south america and cuba (and that adds a great vibe too...a foreign feel).
i love it here but yeah, a lot of wackiness and insanity.

Florida does seem to be a magnet for weirdos. The only reason Fl has more strange newsworthy cases than other states is because a lot of nutjobs from where you live migrated here. I've lived in Central Florida for 20 years now and still haven't met anyone who was actually born here. Everyone is always from some place else.

Im in Tampa, but am from the Northeast like most "normal" Florida people. California and Florida are BIG - they are larger than your average country around the world in terms of population, that's one of the reasons so much weird stuff happens, ALOT of stuff happens in general, so more weird stuff happens. Also, just like California, parts of the state are VERY different; Miami is nothing like Jacksonville, etc....

That's it right there. Florida is mostly inhabited by white trash. The houses are cheap in the vast majority of Florida, so people who like summer but don't have the scratch to live in California wind up in Florida. You get to know people from Florida and they are just basically hillbillies but living in warm climates.

While some of it might have to do with climate, etc... A big part of the reason is actually based on laws regarding government reporting and openness in the state. Simply put, it seems that the same sorts of things happen in other states, but just either don't get noticed, or they are kept quiet... Both of which basically aren't options in Florida.

"Since 1909, Florida has had a proud tradition that all government business is public business and therefore should be available to the public. That means all records, including photos and videos, produced by a public agency are easily accessible with a few narrow and obvious exceptions. Public officials are also required to open all of their meetings — even unofficial ones — to the public."
