Graduate student Steph Stassen, 25, told the Star Tribune that a man in a black shirt came 'out of nowhere' and punched Mr Kolstad in the head after he had left a bar in the early hours of Sunday.

She said: 'He [Kolstad] was knocked out on his feet. He fell straight back and smoked his head on the pavement.'
She added that the sound of Mr Kolstad hitting the concrete was so loud because he didn't catch himself.

Nelson, 20, was arrested 'on suspicion of third-degree assault and underage consumption of alcohol' in Mankato. Witnesses told the Star Tribune that Nelson kicked Mr Kolstad in the head 'like it was a soccer ball'.

Nelson is expected to be arraigned this week. Police are currently looking for the second suspect.

Mr Kolstad is married to Molly, a nurse, who is pregnant with their second child. The couple already have a three-year-old daughter.

He graduated in December with a degree in business management and works in sales at Fastenal, an industrial distribution company.

His father Blaine told WCCO that his son had been out with friends on Saturday night celebrating his graduation when he was attacked in a busy downtown area.

He was found at an intersection around 2am on Sunday by police and taken to hospital in an ambulance.
On a CaringBridge fundraising page, the father wrote: 'He had one surgery today to put a pressure gauge in his skull. He may need additional surgeries in the coming days. We do know that his brain did sustain permanent damage.'
Witnesses said that Mr Kolstad, who was described by a friend as 'a quiet, young man' who was not a big drinker, was with a group of football players in the South Street Saloon in the downtown area just before closing time. Mr Kolstad was found by police half a block from the bar.

The family said in a statement: 'We are extremely grateful for the outpouring of support we have received during this difficult time.

    Ex-Gopher Nelson charged in assault

Police seek second attacker as victim remains in critical condition with severe head injuries.

Former Minnesota Gopher Philip Nelson, 20, was charged in Blue Earth District Court with first-degree and third-degree assault of Isaac Kolstad, who remained in critical condition Monday afternoon at the Mayo Clinic in Mankato.
A neurosurgeon with the hospital said Kolstad was suffering from “a severe head injury and a severe pulmonary injury” and he’s not sure if Kolstad will survive, according to the complaint filed Monday afternoon. If he does, the surgeon, Dr. Dominic Cannella, is “not optimistic that he will make a good recovery,” according to the complaint.
The complaint outlines a fight in the early hours of Sunday morning in Mankato’s entertainment district. Kolstad initially punched Nelson in the back, causing him to fall to the ground, the complaint said, describing surveillance footage.
As Kolstad walked away, an unknown male in a red shirt and blue jeans ran after him, punching him in the head. Kolstad “Immediately goes limp and collapses to the pavement,” the complaint said.
Nelson then pushed past others and “delivers at least one kick to the left side of [Kolstad’s] head,” the complaint said. “The video clearly shows that [Kolstad] was defenseless as Nelson delivers the kick or kicks to the head.”
Kolstad’s skull fracture is on the left side of his head, “the area where Nelson kicked” him, the complaint noted.
Officials continued their search for a second assailant, a white man in his 20s, and asked for the public’s help.
Police say the suspect’s shirt was torn during the fight. They shared surveillance videos hoping the public will recognize the man.
Blue Earth County District Judge Bradley Walker set bail at $20,000. Nelson was still jailed Monday afternoon although he’s expected to post bail.
Nelson’s lawyer Jim Fleming said that Nelson “was not the aggressor.” Fleming said he would be conducting his own investigation over the next several weeks to determine who’s blow caused these injuries.
Nelson told police during a jail interview that a bouncer at Blue Bricks bar had been hitting on his girlfriend and at one point had tried to kiss her, the complaint said.
After he was punched from behind, “he looked to see who did it and saw a guy, which he thought was the bouncer from Blue Bricks,” according to the complaint.
Nelson told police he saw the guy being knocked out by a guy in a red shirt, but that he and his girlfriend tried to get away from the fight. Police said the assault was on surveillance video and asked Nelson if he remembered kicking Kolstad. “Nelson stated that he did not.” He also said he didn’t know the man in the red shirt, according to the complaint.
Witnesses interviewed by the Star Tribune Monday bars had just closed in downtown Mankato when “all of a sudden, this guy comes out of nowhere and sucker punches” Kolstad in the intersection of Front and Cherry Streets near a cove of bars., according to Steph Stassen, 25, a graduate student who first ran to get police.
“He [Kolstad] was knocked out on his feet,” Stassen said. “He fell straight back and smoked his head on the pavement.”
She said “the noise of him hitting his head was so loud.
“He didn’t try to brace himself or catch himself,” Stassen said.
A man she later learned was Nelson then kicked him once in the head “like it was a soccer ball — just out of nowhere.”

    Camon everyone?!? Where's the outrage?

If it had been a 20 year old black guy destroying the life of a 24 year old white guy (especially with a wife and young child) this thread would already be 4 pages of racist bullshit.

It is often advantageous to kick a man when he is down and unconscious
