There's a number of people on here that seem to enjoy the Disney parks, so I thought I'd post this tidbit when I heard it...

If you're a fan of The Great Movie Ride at Disney's Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World, you better get your rides in now. Word is it's closing for good next year for a major new attraction.

I'm torn. Trying not to let nostaligia cloud my vision. It's dated, but they could have fixed that little by little as time went on. And it's one of only a couple remaining attractions from opening day. There are a lot of memories in that attraction.

I'm not positive on what will be replacing it... Only have a few hints.

In a few years, that park is going to look nothing like today. Some of that is good... I'm not convinced on the rest.

I live nearby and go at least quarterly with my family. We have watched it changing much more aggressively ever since they bought the Star Wars portfolio. I love SW but it's starting to be a bit much over there in Hollywood Studios.

Right before they tore down the big blue hat my wife forced us to take a bunch of selfies with it in the background. Maybe I'll post one of the shots here sometime when I'm drunk and craving a little ridicule. :chair:

That hat was fucking horrible. They propped up a glorified pin shop and used it as the icon for the park. Horrible.

It screwed up the view of the beautiful Chinese theatre at the end of the street from the entrance of the park.

    Totally agree about Star Wars.

It means a central area will be under construction for some time in an already small park. It needed to go, it was pretty blah by today's standards.

I read that when it opened there was barely anything to do there. It was during Eisner's revenue maximizing period. No ToT, no RnR coaster, no Toy Story Mania, all the big draws didn't exist then.

All that old shit is going bye-bye to make room for Star Wars 'worlds'.

    The sketches look pretty cool.

Didn't they just do a revamp of The Great Movie Ride in partnership with TCM?

Because of the pre-existing deal with Universal Studios, Disney can't build any Marvel-themed attractions in Florida.

When it opened back in the late 80's, there were working soundstages and an animation studio, so actual tv and film production was taking place on-site. That's been gone for some time, hence the need to build more rides. The rumor is that it was built as a rush job in order to counter the opening of Universal Studios.

Yeah, I read that in a book on the Eisner years. (Keys to the Kingdom?). They also wanted an extra gate to be able to get a little more ticket revenue. WDW has more dispersed attractions with each park offering less than DisneyLand, which is more packed with real attractions. At least ones you'd want to go see.

    That's the one in California.

The one in Florida is safe... For now.

There's a Guardians of the Galaxy project close to approval for Epcot... If that happens, Florida's tower won't change. If it doesn't... All bets are off.

I'm not sure if he will be able to see the thread. I blocked him a couple months ago. I couldn't take any more food pics.

Prediction for Avatar land: Huge disappointment, despite the clever construction. Film was so long ago kids won't know it and adults are over it. Sequels, no longer having the novelty of 3D to draw big crowds, will suffer from mediocre storyline and endless CGI that the original had. Rethemed within a decade.
