Fred Astaire really was a great dancer

Disclaimer: I am not gay and faggot. Really . . .

Was flipping the channels and came upon "That's Entertainment" on TCM. They did a segment on Fred. What an amazing dancer. Dorky looking but so fluid. They showed him with different actors and actresses and they were always a split second behind him. Even Gene Kelly admitted he was out of everyone's league. I always figured a dancer is a dancer is a dancer. But he was not hype - he was all his legacy says and more.

Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did, except backwards and in high heels. -Ann Richards

I know there are talented people around today. But why don't we see performances like this more often? I guess movies are all special effects these days. All the dancing I see on tv now is really gay or over sexualized.

My dear grandfather was known to both look like and to cut a rug, with the same enthusiasm as Fred... God rest his soul.

I respectfully disagree. The clip I saw of them together clearly showed Fred to be leading. Kelly kept glancing at Fred to try and mimic his moves while Fred just did his thing very confidently. Yes, Kelly was more of regular guy looking so I can see his appeal. But sorry, Gene was Gehrig to Fred's Babe Ruth.

I do see Fred as having a much more natural airy style as opposed to Gene Kelly's more athletic style.
It's true I am way biased because I've had a ridiculous crush on Gene Kelly since watching Singin in the Rain as a young girl. :D

I once heard someone make the point that if you think Fred Astaire was a good dancer consider this: Ginger Rogers matched him step-for-step -- and she did it in high heels and going backwards.

Some old feminist twat said that one. She was full of shit. Astaire choreographed his routines which were very complex. Start around the two minute mark. This bit was all his genius- he's every dancer in the routine.

Men lead in ballroom dancing. Women have the easy part.
