RIP to the 29 on board - almost half Ohioans.
Fuck you Gordon Lightfoot!
Duplicate post deleted.
This. Only get remembered because of the song.
That song reminds me of modeling at Nordstrom. I don't know why, but it puts me back in the runway modeling ski wear. Weird
I saw an interesting documentary on him. turns out he's still doing time for that, but he is coming up for parole in 2024
What did he do??
You must be one of those people that thought because he had a hit song he shouldn't go to prison for sinking that ship.
LAINE: Andrea Doria? Isn’t that the one they did the song about?
JERRY: Edmund Fitzgerald.
ELIANE: I love Edmund Fitzgerald’s voice.
JERRY: No, Gordon Lightfoot was the singer. Edmund Fitzgerald was the ship.
ELAINE: I think Gordon Lightfoot was the boat.
JERRY: Yeah, and it was rammed by the Cat Stevens.
Gordon Lightfoot sinks a freighter and kills 29 people just so he can have an idea to write a song, which becomes a hit. He then gets sentenced to prison. Aren't they teaching this in school anymore?
He sunk the damned ship so he could write a song about it.
I musta cut class that day
Lightfoot wrote that song in 1970, the ship sank in 1975. Tell me he didn't sabotage it.
Is this true?? I never heard this
He's one of America's most prolific mass murderers.
I remember on a trip to Detroit when I was 12, my uncle, who lived there, telling my dad about the Edmund Fitzgerald that had sunk the previous winter. As I recall, we were driving past that cathedral referenced in the song (which spurred the conversation).
I can vaguely remember the news reports, but my uncle's story about it resonated with me for some reason. I just couldn't fathom how rough the seas could get on an inland lake.
I never really understood why they didn't go down there and retrieve the bodies they could find for burial. Superior is so cold that bacterial growth is limited, and I remember in some doc I watched that a diver said he saw a body (and/or bodies) floating around inside the wreck.
