The Stern staff has long used the phrase "friend of the show" to imply that there are celebrities who are partial to THSS over other shows. I infer that what they're implying is that they have special access to a number of celebrities.

I've always thought the term "friend of the show" was the faggiest fucking term I'd ever heard. It just sounds retarded and is also untrue.

Sure there are washed-up has-beens like Joan Rivers or D-list folks like Kathy Griffin and Lisa Lampenelli who appear a lot. But where the fuck else are they supposed to go? Nobody is looking for those women to sit down and plug their shit. Same with that horrible band "Train." Those folks are only "friends" in that they have shit they need to plug and nobody else will put them on.

Then there are those retards who do Celebrity Super Fan Round Table....again, nobody is looking for them. Obviously a number of them have personal relationships with Howard--I suppose that makes them his friend, but I wouldn't go so far as to claim they're friends of the show.

Don't get me started about how Gary claimed that Patrice O'Neal was "one of our guys" and stating that they put him on the map. A bigger lie has never been told.

Friend of the show could just imply someone who is on more regularly than normal. I never really gave it much thought when they use that term.

Zero, I think you are right for the most part about it being used nowadays, but I think it used to mean people who would do the show even if they did not have to. Dee Snider and Dice were big back in the day but they liked the show and came on it for the fuck of it. Kevin Bacon also to a lesser extent. At that time they did not need Howard. I also could not fucking believe the comment that Gary made about Patrice.

If Howard was truly friends with any of the A-list types like Clooney or Pitt, wouldn't they show up for an interview or two??:dontknow:

Not too many "friends" left if that's the definition. Maybe Robert Duvall?

It's mostly gibberish, but it bugged me when Gary would talk about someone like Patrice O'Neal as a friend of the show as if his death was a huge personal loss. He turned up on the show for plugs just like he did on countless shows across the country, Stern was nothing special to him.

When did Gary say that? I must have missed it. Patrice was on the show a couple of times but he didn't really like Howard and Howard even says that whenever Patrice's name comes up on the show. Last time Dave Attell was on Howard said that again.

Then he harassed Howard at his home with a phone call. On his birthday too! They must hate eachother :funny:

"Friend of the Show" is just a buzzword Gary likes to throw around for that motley assortment of c-list comedians and thirty something actor-directors who grew up sneaking listens to Howard when their parents weren't paying attention...I mean how close of a friend can anyone be when the show is on two days a week now?
