    I've been saddled with the duty of advising/helping a family member with replacing their warm air heating system. They want to add air conditioning to the new furnace.

    It is a natural gas furnace......one zone
    Furnace is located in a full basement.
    Anyone know of any reputably installer on Long Island?

    Furnace makers.....Lennox, Rheem,Luxaire,York, Byrant, etc? Any thoughts?

    Do they make furnaces that go into chimneys anymore or are they all vented out the side wall with PVC?

    I recommend a 95 percent efficient gas furnace with a 15 seer Outdoor AC unit. Warranty is key. Brand not so much. Check out Goodman. Prices are good and they extend a life time warranty on the unit to the orginal customer.

    Any furnace manufacture you like?
    It is a small 3 bedroom ranch.
    I also read that bigger is not better. Long heating/cooling cycles better than short ones especially in the summer. Longer cooling cycles by unit help with lowering humidity in the house.

    A buddy of mine is a salesmen for these things. Make the companies bid against each other. They all want the sale, bad, and can come way down on the price. Annual service and warrantees are shit they can throw in, get them in the deal and don't pay for them.

    Most here, including me, will give you opinions based on half baked knowledge and word of mouth...some may even recommend something because that's what 'they' did....

    If I had to re-do my system I'd do it myself, but first I'd check with Baddfun for advice....it's free, why not

    @Stew Nod is correct. I was going to recommend a charcoal Weber grill (windows sealed, of course) for heating and a portable fan and an ice tray for cooling, but that SN fellow may be on to something with that thar "expertise" issue.

    i basically have exact set up. 3 bed cape with gas furnace in basement. Installed a 100,000 btu 95% efficient furnace with 3 ton condenser and "A" coil for furnace. Ran line set myself. Had to add a high return on second floor because house was heat only and had only one low return on first floor. If you got the $$$ go for lenox or Rheem. My buddy said goodman is actually good stuff if you have a tight budget.

    @BaddFunn
    Your furnace vents through side wall with PVC or into chimney?

    This is a one level ranch so existing return may be sufficient?
    I believe the old furnace is 70,000 BTU and 40,000 BTU water heater venting into an outside wall brick chimney.....of 55 year old home. The furnace is 55 years old. A blower motor every 10-15 years is all the service it has ever required.
