George Clooney: plastic surgery and dying your hair actually make you look older
The actor has said he thinks men's attempts to reverse the signs of ageing actually backfire

Men who dye their hair and have plastic surgery are actually making themselves look older, according to George Clooney.

In an age where Hollywood demands ever more youthful stars, coming to terms with grey hairs and wrinkles is no easy task.

But the film star, who has long been admired for his ability to age gracefully, has argued there is no point “trying to fight" the ageing process.

The 54-year-old actor has confessed he does not think dyeing hair or plastic surgery “really works”, adding “I think it actually makes you look older”.

The film star conceded that the onslaught of mother nature can be particularly hard on actors, who are offered fewer roles and less prominent characters.

But he said: “I think for all of us, you have to come to terms with getting older and not trying to fight it.

“You have a couple of options – which is get older or die.

“And so you have to get used to that idea that your roles in films and who you are and how you’re perceived is going to change. That will disappoint people at times.”

Have we reached peak plastic surgery?

Asked by BBC presenter Jenni Murray if he had ever considered cosmetic surgery or even dyeing his hair, he said: “Clearly I haven’t.

“For me it’s never been an issue or an option. I don’t think it would make much sense quite honestly.

“I’ve seen it happen – particularly on men – I don’t think it really works, I think it actually makes you look older.

“I’m a big believer in the idea that you can’t try to look younger. You just have to look the best you can at the age you are.”

Last year Clooney was voted the world’s top 'Man Aging Gracefully' - given the colloquial acronym 'MAG'. In a poll of 1,000 people the actor was deemed the winner of a list of men over 40 to have embraced aging, receiving top marks for not dyeing his hair and for ‘looking happy in his skin’.

His comments come after Oscar-winning actress Jane Fonda told the Telegraph: “It is OK for men to get older, because men become more desirable by being powerful".

In an interview, the 77-year-old said: "With women, it’s all about how we look... So, for us, it’s all about trying to stay young.”

Mr Clooney also said he was "glad" Hollywood had begun to discuss the issue of women’s pay. He said it was "probably the only good thing that came out of the Sony hack - which I think was an abomination for the most part".

The emails from executives at Sony Pictures leaked by hackers revealed Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence was paid less than her male co-stars in the blockbuster American Hustle.

Mr Clooney continued: "the one good thing that has come out of it is the conversation in very liberal Hollywood that women aren’t being paid the same. I think there are 15 female directors in town. I think it’s a very good conversation they're starting to have."

The movie star added that he had married “a very strong, clever woman” but denied the pair were a power couple. His wife Amal is a respected lawyer and was among a high profile legal team advising the Greek government on possible action in the international court regarding the return of the Elgin marbles.

Further fuelling speculation that the actor has political aspirations, Mr Clooney said: “Bill and Hilary [Clinton] seems to be a power couple.

“I think we’re just a couple with great interest in the human condition. I don’t think of it as particularly powerful I just think of it as our responsibility as people on the planet.”

I get this feeling, too. I know it's popular to bash him, but he seems like a real guy - not to mention he spends his "down" time trying to save starving people in Africa instead of wasting his time bilking the naive to build a fucking kitty farm.

I never got why he was supposed to be such a heartthrob but he does fund things like:
The Satellite Sentinel Project (SSP) was conceived by George Clooney and Enough Project co-founder John Prendergastduring their October 2010 visit to South Sudan.[1][2] Through the use of satellite imagery, SSP provides an early warning system to deter mass atrocities by focusing world attention and generating rapid responses on human rights and human security concerns.

His 2006 Oscar acceptance speech begs to differ. South Park did an entire episode on how pretentious he is.

He's absolutely right. IMHO, there is nothing sexier than a mature looking man. A little gray at the temples, a few laugh lines...yummy...
