George Martin, Producer and Arranger for The Beatles, Dies at 90

The so-called ‘Fifth Beatle’ signed the band (then minus Ringo) in 1962 and introduced lavish arrangements into their songs.
George Martin, the “Fifth Beatle” and British treasure who signed the Fab Four to a label contract when no one else would, produced virtually all their songs and introduced lavish arrangements into “Yesterday” and “A Day in the Life,” has died. He was 90.

Beatles drummer Ringo Starr shared the news on Twitter, writing "Peace and love... George will be missed." A Universal Music Group spokesperson confirmed Martin's death, though details are not yet clear.

The producer, executive, arranger, musician and British knight was behind a whopping 23 No. 1 singles in the U.S. and 30 in the U.K.

As head of EMI’s Parlophone Records, which then concentrated on jazz and comedy, Martin was on the lookout for a rock act when he met Beatles manager Brian Epstein in February 1962. Every other British label had passed on signing the foursome — John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Pete Best.

Martin called their demo made for Decca Records a month earlier “rather unpromising,” but there was something about those Lennon-McCartney harmonies, so he scheduled The Beatles for a recording session at EMI’s Abbey Road studios in June. He liked what he heard and signed them up. (The Hollies would later join Parlophone as well.)

2016 continues to be the year the music died.
Don Mclean may have to write American Pie 2 before the year is out.

This is so true. Band hit everything from catchy pop songs to rock to psychedelic. Tons of great songs. Can listen to the Beatles no matter what mood I'm in, which I can't say for any other band.

Hey, remember when know it all Howard went on a rant about how Martin gets way too much credit and really added nothing to The Beatles?

His accomplishments are eternal, as valid and actual as Beethoven or Ellington.

This is no time to offer anything but praise. Neither blame nor wonder at what was not. We should only appreciate that we lived to hear it, and will continue to enjoy now that he has left us. I cannot hear "In My Life" with the harpsichord, "Eleanor Rigby" without the strings, or the sonorous orchestra crash that closes "A Day In The Life."

He saw potential, and while that usually means nothing but disappointment to those weighed down with such expectations, his work and legacy are the crystallization of what was at the time only possible. As William Blake said, "What is now real was once only imagined." I thank God that Martin imagined the world he did. We are all richer for it.

Oh, and he also produced Jeff Beck's Blow By Blow.

I'm fried as a churro right now, so please excuse my meandering.

Yes! Fucking asshole said something like, "All he did was press 'Record.'"

Dick-licking shit for brains was probably too busy trying to get everyone to listen to Enuff Z'Nuff.

Howard's a moron. I wonder if Howard will now change his tune so that he can join in on all the praising which will be going on.

In fact, I'll bet he was just about to write George a nice apology note when Beth rushed in with the news. That never gets old.

He was a major piece of the puzzle, from pre-fame to the last notes of "Abbey Road". If anyone deserved to be called the fifth Beatle, goddammit it was George Martin.

First thing I thought of when I saw he died.
The Wig will probably come on and say how Martin wasn't shit to the Beatles.
The Wig thinks he knows a lot about the Beatles but he doesn't know shit if he doesn't know how much Martin did for them.
Also , if GM sucked so bad how come he worked with Paul after the Beatles.
The fuckin Wig doesn't even know Martin did Live and Let Die with Paul and its one of his
    favorite songs.
    Count down to the Wig talking shit again 3 , 2 , 1 .............

It was a long winding road for George. It seems like yesterday the Beatles were together.

The only thing Howard knows about music is pushing 'PLAY'.

Well as with most topics about music, he has no clue with what he speaks of. Martin was a huge part of their career and what they accomplished.
He was a true gentleman in every sense of the word.
    RIP George!
