I have a misdemeanor from 17 years ago on my record, and worried that it's going to prevent me from getting a decent job. Seems most places do a background check - it's been about 20 years since I've had to look. Anyone here have a good gig despite a misdemeanor record? Howard related because he doesn't work either? o_O

They only worry about felonies. Unless you want to be a truck driver and have a misdemeanor dui.

You should be able to get your record expunged after 5 years.

Appreciate it buddy. I'm finding that some places are specifically asking about both felony and misdemeanor convictions. I'm blowing my mind up over here!

when I was a young guy I left school
didn't know what I wanted to do
you're 19-20-you can do shit like that

had an interview at this factory--my dad set it up--his hope was it would make me realize I should go back to school
another guy was in the trailer that was serving as the HR office--asks the HR dude if they do police checks
the HR dude says if we did then none of the dudes working there would have been hired

so I went back to school that next fall

that's all I have to add here

It depends on what the misdemeanor was and if youve rectified it. If it something like driving on suspended license and you have one now then youre fine. If its misdeameanor possession of child porn even Subway wont hire you.

Reckless driving, and like I said it was 17 years ago, clean record since then - dumb, dumb, dumb ass mistake. The job I want is with a school district, and they appear to be pretty thorough in their checks.

Be honest, they'll find it. I work at a fantastic company and they only worry about felonies. Unless you lie

Just be upfront about it, it works in your favor that it was so long ago.

I can't imagine anyone giving a shit about a misdemeanor from 17yrs ago. You could probably still get a police job if you applied

Completely agree. I tend to get a little paranoid about these things and overthink the situation.
