McHenry High School West Campus, in McHenry, IL, is currently facing serious backlash for not allowing a student to walk in graduation because she was wearing her military uniform.

Megan Howerton, a U.S. Marine, chose to wear her Dress Blues instead of the required graduation cap and gown, NBC New York reports. School officials refused to let her walk in graduation, instead making her sit in the audience. Megan wasn't even mentioned in the graduation lineup, sparking outrage and a hashtag.

In response to the controversy, Megan's classmates returned to school the day after graduation to protest. They also plan to attend a school board meeting to try to get the school to change the policy for future students.

The school told NBC 5 News, "In some past cases, active-duty students elected to wear their gowns over top of their military uniforms, with their military hats, which was allowed. There was no communication to the administration that attire protocols would not be followed prior to the ceremony."

Megan wasn't available for comment, but she did share a Facebook post condemning the school's actions.

she should follow the rules and do as the school says

I suspect she knew the date of the graduation ceremony at least a few days in advance, why not sort it all out with the administrators ahead of time?

You have the story completely wrong--

“There was no communication to the administration that attire protocols would not be followed prior to the ceremony. The tradition of cap and gown regalia is aimed at the idea that our graduates are celebrated as a whole and in similar attire.”

According to the Northwest Herald, Howerton said in a statement released by the Corps that she was informed of the district’s policy.

"I do not want the controversy that is saturating social media, and I do not want to draw attention away from the class of 2016," Howerton stated. "That being said, it was my choice not to participate in the graduation."

Slippery slope letting a few wear whatever they want. Just put the damn cap and gown on I say.

This really fucking bothers me. I am all for our military. They are the best. No question. But come on, don't they teach you to follow the rules in the Marines? Should anyone be allowed to wear whatever they want to graduation.

    1. Pretty sure you have to be a HS graduate to be a Marine.

    2. It's a civilian ceremony, we know you're proud, but wearing a uniform when everyone else is in cap and gowns is an attention seeking gesture.

    3. Wide hipped "Marines" who can't do 20 pull ups is not doing them any PR favors either.

    EDIT:

    From the Marine Corps website

    HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE
Do I have to graduate from high school before I can become a Marine?

You will need to receive your high school diploma before beginning recruit training; however, you can talk to a recruiter or sign your enlistment contract before graduating high school. A recruiter can answer any questions you have, including discussing case-by-case options for those with nontraditional high school diplomas or completion certificates.

She could have worn her dress blues under her gown and her military cap. She knew everyone was supposed to wear the gown, she showed up without it, she made the choice not to walk.

She's going to fail in the Marines if she can't follow the simple rules about attire

The marines love ppl who can't or won't follow rules and feel a strong need to express their individuality. :)

Wait till they sue and some judge makes them change the rules. You'll have guys walking up to get their diplomas wearing something from Sgt. Pepper.
