I'm hearing everywhere that Glenn Frey died of pneumonia. Hasn't that always been the code word for "AIDS"?

I never thought Frey as gay, but maybe he was an intravenous drug user.

What 67 year old - with all the money in the world to spend on medical care - dies of pneumonia?

    TMZ:

We're told the cause of death was a combination of complications from rheumatoid arthritis, acute ulcerative colitis, and pneumonia.

Frey had been battling intestinal issues for months and had surgery in November. We're told in the last few days his condition took a turn for the worse. He died in New York City.

Glenn co-wrote and sang on most of the Eagles hits, including "Take It Easy," "Tequila Sunrise," "Lyin' Eyes," and "Heartache Tonight," to name a few. He also co-wrote "Hotel California" and "Desperado" with Don Henley and took home 6 Grammys with the band.

After the Eagles' 1980 breakup, Glenn launched a successful solo career, recording numerous hits ... most notably "The Heat Is On" and "You Belong to the City."

Glenn also got into acting, snagging a recurring role on "Miami Vice."

He reunited with the Eagles in '94 for their monster Hell Freezes Over tour and recorded music till the end, releasing what would be his fifth and final solo LP, "After Hours," in 2012.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer had been fighting intestinal issues for awhile but his condition relapsed before the holidays, forcing the Eagles to pull out of their Kennedy Center Honors appearance in December. At the time, the band said he needed major surgery that would require a lengthy recovery.

Don Henley said, "He was like a brother to me; we were family, and like most families, there was some dysfunction. But the bond we forged 45 years ago was never broken."

He added ... "We built something that has lasted longer than anyone could have dreamed. But Glenn was the one who started it all. It will be very strange going forward in a world without him in it. But I will be grateful, every day, that he was in my life. Rest in peace, my brother. You did what you set out to do, and then some."

    Glenn was 67. RIP.

If he had ulcerative colitis, and then had surgery, it could have led to pneumonia. I don't think it's AIDS.

Some cases of pneumonia are contracted by breathing in small droplets that contain the organisms that can cause pneumonia. These droplets get into the air when a person infected with these germs coughs or sneezes. In other cases, pneumonia is caused when bacteria or viruses that are normally present in the mouth, throat, or nose inadvertently enter the lung. During sleep, it is quite common for people to aspirate secretions from the mouth, throat, or nose. Normally, the body's reflex response (coughing back up the secretions) and their immune system will prevent the aspirated organisms from causing pneumonia. However, if a person is in a weakened condition from another illness, a severe pneumonia can develop. People with recent viral infections, lung disease, heart disease, and swallowing problems, as well as alcoholics, drug users, and those who have suffered a stroke or seizure are at higher risk for developing pneumonia than the general population. As we age, our swallowing mechanism can become impaired as does our immune system. These factors, along with some of the negative side effects of medications, increase the risk for pneumonia in the elderly.

Once organisms enter the lungs, they usually settle in the air sacs and passages of the lung where they rapidly grow in number. This area of the lung then becomes filled with fluid and pus (the body's inflammatory cells) as the body attempts to fight off the infection.

He had intestinal surgery in November. Sounds like he had something serious going on.

If he sufferred from rheumatoid arthritis and acute ulcerative colitis, he was likely being treated with a biological drug, there are about 6 of them currently marketed for those conditions (Remicade) They help reduce the inflammation that is the damaging part of the disease, but, they kick the crap out of your immune system. Pneumonia could easily kill someone with a compromised immune system which is why it is often the cause of death in HIV patients.

Not only can pneumonia be contracted easily, when you are in recovery or post-surgery, you are often bed-bound. This leads to fluid build up in the lungs and then to pneumonia.

I was hospitalized being severely ill with pneumonia in my early 30's...and it wasn't like I was an unhealthy person leading up to the illness.

I am sure his immune system was low, due to his auto immune diseases and the medicines taken for them.

Sadly he caught something that has body couldn't fight off... IE: pneumonia.

    Nothing tawdry here folks.

Your analysis is supported by what Frey's manager has now stated publicly:

"The death of Eagles cofounder Glenn Frey on Monday at age 67 can be blamed in part on the medications he was taking, Eagles manager Irving Azoff told TheWrap.

Frey died from rheumatoid arthritis, colitis and pneumonia, according to the band’s website. Azoff said the latter two were caused by medications that he was taking for the inflammatory disorder.

“The colitis and pneumonia were side effects from all the meds,” he told TheWrap. “He died from complications of ulcer and colitis after being treated with drugs for his rheumatoid arthritis which he had for over 15 years.”'

The last place you want to be in this world is a hospital especially post surgical. You get a hospital borne infection and you very well may end up on the slab in no time.
