Which is better... or, better yet, which do you prefer?

I think the Godfather is more sublime and "prettier", albeit a bit slower paced. Part 2 has the DeNiro factor and the finality of Michaels decent into evil (and it is, upon mulitple viewings it should be impossible to "like" him at the end as he sites ponderously staring at the water having destroyed his family).

And if you say Part 3 - kill yourself. As I told someone the other night: Godfather and Godfather 2 are like an evening at the symphony. Casino and Goodfellas are like an evening at a great rock concert. Godfather 3 is like an evening of explosive diahreea while watching your mom finger herself.

Just watched the marathon over Christmas holiday. I have to say GF 2 for the reasons you stated. The descent of Michael into evil and watching the power he gained and used was great.

    Both perfect classics though.

Godfather. Innocent Michael starting the descent into the family business is a better story, James Caan beating the shit out of Carlo, Caan getting full of lead and of course the climax of the movie where all the rivals are taken out makes it better.

That is the greatest part of all the GF movies and one of the greatest in cinema history, in my opinion.

I'm going to be a pussy and say I can't decide. They're both incredible movies that we'll never see anything of that caliber come out ever again.

That's a tough one, but I have to go with The Godfather. We see the making of a monster and that's more interesting than war or expansion.

That being said, both movies are as close to perfect as any movie ever made.

I'm going with The Godfather. But the best part of this discussion is that there is no right answer. Both are great movies and you can't fault anyone for picking one over the other.

It's a toss up but I'd go with Godfather since the star power is ever so slightly better than Part II (Sterling Hayden and Brando).

I'll go with II because I absolutely despise Kay and that was the one in which she got smacked.

The Godfather, but just barely. Mostly because of Marlon Brando. Every scene he's in is a classic.

    Bonasara, Bonasara....
