Though doubts surmount concerning how comfortable consumers will be with sharing personal information from the vehicle, the auto makers have unilaterally decided to limit the vehicle data that they share with the technology partners, Apple and Google.

The Auto companies; Ford, GM and Volkswagen AG's Audi subsidiary want to prevent tech providers from gaining access to the potentially profitable information collected by computer systems in cars and themselves hope to monetize on that information.

On the other hand, infotainment systems such as Apple's CarPlay and Google's Android Auto that link Smartphone to vehicle infotainment systems are eager to expand their area of operations.

Don Butler, Ford Motor Co's executive director of connected vehicle and services asserted that the automobile companies need to control access to that data in a bid to protect their ability to create value from new digital services built on vehicle data.

Auto companies hope that the vehicle data will one day generate billions of dollars in e-commerce such that earlier this year, General Motors Co told its investors that it expects to realize an additional $350 million in revenue over three years from the high-speed in-built data connections in its cars.

Friedmar Rumpel, vice president in AlixPartners' automotive practice stated," The risk is, if you give up control and somebody else figures out that business model, then you lose the future revenue stream". Further, Consultant AlixPartners estimates that the digitally connected cars will boost its global revenues from $16 billion in 2013 to $40 billion by 2018.

In a parallel endeavour, some car companies have designed their own systems like Ford is installing one such proprietary system called Sync 3 which will supplement CarPlay and Android Auto.

You should see some of those car dealerships that have mechanisms to shut down cars when you make a late payment. Whose to say some geek hacker couldn't get into that shit to fuck stuff up :jj:

Or control. The scariest thing though, is if all the power went out all of the sudden. There'd be chaos within that night.

Electricity is the only thing that keeps us from slipping back into the dark ages. Can you imagine? It would be complete and total chaos. there was a series on netflix about what it could be like, dont remember the name though.

It's getting to the point where technology doesn't improve our lives.

well if its the auto companies vs the tech companies, my money is on the tech guys. the auto companies have proven they don't care about their customers at all. at least so far some tech biggies are trying.

One of my friends managed to get into the engine management system of his 10-year old BMW M5. He found some official factory software somewhere on the darknet. He could change EVERYTHING with his laptop. From the amount of time the lights stay on after you leave the car, to the fuel/oxygen mixture in the engine. Pretty cool stuff.

Just reverse your battery connections, positive cable to negative battery post and negative to positive....That'll fix 'em
