Austrian granny shreds a million euros

Vienna (AFP) - An Austrian 85-year-old cut up into tiny pieces almost a million euros ($1.1 million) in an apparent attempt to spite her heirs, authorities said Thursday.

After the woman died in a retirement home, the 950,000 euros as well as savings accounts books were found shredded on her bed, prosecutors said.

State prosecutor Erich Habitzl confirmed the discovery -- first reported in the Kurier daily -- but said that there was nothing he could do for the relatives.

"The damage of the money in the woman's property is not a criminal matter, so we have not begun any investigation," Habitzl told AFP.

Kurier reported however that the woman's surviving family will have the last laugh, with Austria's central bank (OeNB) saying it will replace all the cash.

"If the heirs can only find shreds of money and if the origin of the money is assured, then of course it can all be replaced," Friedrich Hammerschmidt, deputy head of the OeNB cashier division, told Kurier.

"If we didn't pay out the money then we would be punishing the wrong people."

people dont understand that as long as the serial number is visible a treasury will replace the bills. they have serial numbers on the bills so they can be uniquely identified.

Maybe she would have had less time to shred if the assholes came around more often to visit.

It was the same with my wife's family, she had two wealthy aunts that never had their own children. My wife was the only one that genuinely visited them, called, and would pick them up for all family holiday functions and dinners so they can be involved, and only did it because she's a caring person. My wife's greedy sister and her cousins couldn't give a rats ass if the old ladies were alive or not. But when the ladies eventually passed away, her sister and cousins were the first to demand their inheritance.

In the United States, you must submit more than half (over 50 percent) of the paper bill intact.

    Serial numbers are never mentioned.;)

Mutilated Currency and Bent and Partial Coin
    Currency Procedures
Mutilated currency is a note that has been damaged to the extent that one-half or less of the note remains, or its value is questionable and special examination by trained experts at the Department of the Treasury or the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) (Off-site Link) is required before any exchange is made.

Under regulations issued by the Department of the Treasury, mutilated United States currency may be exchanged at face value if:

    • More than 50% of a note identifiable as United States currency is present
    – OR–

    • 50% or less of a note identifiable as United States currency is present and the method of mutilation and supporting evidence demonstrates to the satisfaction of the Treasury that the missing portions have been totally destroyed. Burnt currency that is clearly less than one-half a complete note, and cannot be handled without compromising its integrity, is considered Mutilated Currency.
Any badly soiled, dirty, defaced, disintegrated, limp, torn, or worn out currency note that is clearly more than one-half of the original note, and does not require special examination to determine its value, is not considered mutilated and should be included in your normal deposit.

To view examples of Mutilated Currency, review the Visual Reference Guide.

The Federal Reserve DOES NOT accept deposits of mutilated currency. Mutilated currency must be sent directly to the BEP with a letter stating the estimated value of the currency and an explanation of how the currency became mutilated, by Registered Mail, Return Receipt Requested, directly to the following address:

    Department of the Treasury
    Bureau of Engraving and Printing
    MCD/OFM, BEPA
    Room 344A
    Washington, D.C. 20013

You may call the BEP’s toll-free number (866) 575-2361, to obtain information on a Mutilated Currency claim.

If you believe the mutilated currency has also been contaminated such that it may pose a health or safety risk, write the word “Contaminated “ on all internal packaging (not on the outside of the mailing container) and include a description of the contaminant, if known, in your letter to the BEP. For additional non-mutilated contaminated currency depositing information, please refer to the Contaminated Currency section.

    Coin Procedures
Bent and partial coin is coin that has been bent or twisted out of shape, punched, clipped, plugged, fused, or defaced, but that can be identified as to genuineness and denomination. Bent and partial coin is not redeemable at face value; it is redeemable only at its bullion (metal) value as established by the Director of the U.S. Mint.

The Federal Reserve DOES NOT accept deposits of bent and partial coin. Bent and partial coin should be forwarded via 'Registered Mail, Return Receipt Requested' to the address below with documentation of the circumstances:

    United States Mint
    Independence Mall
    P.O. Box 400
    Philadelphia, PA 19105

If you believe the coin has been contaminated, please refer to the Contaminated Coin section for information on decontaminating the coin. The Federal Reserve does not accept deposits of Contaminated Coin.

    Mutilated Currency
    • The Federal Reserve DOES NOT accept deposits of mutilated currency.
    • Mutilated currency is currency that has been damaged to the extent that one-half or less of the note remains, or its condition is such that its value is questionable and special examination by trained experts at the Department of the Treasury or the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) (Off-site Link) is required before any exchange is made.
    • Mutilated currency must be sent directly to the BEP with a letter stating the estimated value of the currency and an explanation of how the currency became mutilated.

they don't have to be mentioned. they are a given: no country produces unserialized paper currency, and all countries guarantee to replace such currency as long as the original serial number is presented.

you don't need to mention it because this is how currency exchange works globally.

if they cannot read the original serial number then it is not recognizable.

in US currency the serial number is not only printed across the bill quarters but it is encoded in the plastic strips embedded in the paper.

but of course you believe what you want..
