They always were about as hardcore as Avril Lavigne, a pop band with a thin veneer of punk for marketing purposes.

Still turned out a few good tracks in their time.

If it wasn't for Greenday, we would not have Blink182, Good Charlotte, Sum41...

    Oh wait.

right. they didnt just sell out, the whole band concept was a sellout from the start.

one could also argue that most bands who sign with a record co. is selling out

I love it when a bunch of middle aged men speak of "selling out", like they're some kind of 20 year old hippies. Green Day are musicians, they're earning a living, and they're no more selling out than you guys who make a living. If you don't earn money, then you're just High Pitch Eric.

not true. i'm a musician. i didn't sell out. you can say no one gave me the chance to. and that's true, not for millions. however, i have turn down gigs in cover/tribute bands which would have paid me 5x what i was making.
one can earn money and still stay true to themself

the guy from greenday is smart and i have no issue with him. but he doesn't write for the love of the song, he writes what he feels will sell the most records and earn him the most money. as opposed to guys who write what they love and coincidentally other people end up loving too, so they get rich and famous

I understand that certain musicians believe in things and don't want to compromise those principles, but to many, music is a fun way to express yourself and make a living, and has nothing to do with politics or principles. That's the way a neanderthal like me thinks anyway.

I call bullshit, maybe they like Angry Birds and like Broadway. Now if they slammed all that shit, like Howard always did, and then made money off it it's a different story.

They didn't sell out - they evolved. Organically, even. It is what it is. I know because I was on rock and roll jeopardy.

Not a huge fan of Greenday but I think some of their songs are catchy.

That being said, a guy from the bay area singing with a british accent to mimick Johny Rotten doesn't really scream authenticity.

I won't criticize them for trying to make some extra cash though. They are middle age guys now and it's not like they are trying to be hip and edgy any more. I also give them credit for coming out with to big albums with lots of hits a decade apart. That doesn't happen much any more

Exactly. If the acquisition of wealth was the sole criterion by which we judge success, we'd all start out stripping on a pole.
