I love great ww2 movies. To Hell and Back needs to be remade. Modern special FX would be terrific. I read that they held back on some of Audie Murphy's heroics to make the film more believable. The man was epic. Private Ryan was fine, To Hell and Back would crush. True stories are usually better than fiction or 'based on' movies.
Really great movie, but I was disappointed years later to learn it was only VERY loosely based on a true story. Apparently there was no major insurrection among the prisoners (not that I blame them, given their poor health).
"In reality, the actual bridge took 8 months to build (rather than two months), and they were actually used for two years, and were only destroyed [by numerous air raids] two years after their construction - in late June 1945." http://www.diggerhistory.info/pages-battles/ww2/kwai.htm
