Calif. man helps save trapped family, gets $143 bill

ELK GROVE -- A man who helped a family trapped in a crash got a bill in the mail for his unselfish act.

Paramedics sent him the first-responder fee of nearly $150 after he says they only checked his pulse and gave him a bottle of water, reports CBS Sacramento.

A photo shows the aftermath of the scary rollover crash that trapped a man and his three children trapped inside.

Derrick Deanda jumped into action and recounted the heart-pounding moment.

"I pulled up right as it happened," he said. "There was a guy standing inside the van, because it was on its side, holding a 2 year-old infant."

Deanda broke the glass to free the family before paramedics arrived. Everyone was okay.

But weeks later Deanda got a bill in the mail from the Cosumnes Community Services District with a $143 first-responder fee.

Deputy Chief Mike McLaughlin says his district billed the good Samaritan.

"We're obligated to provide the same level of service, the same billing the same everything, for every patient we encounter," he said.

Deanda became a patient, he says, when a paramedic at the scene checked him out after breaking the van window to help save the family inside. Deanda had a small cut.

"This is truly a unique situation," he said. "In my 28 years, this is my first time I've run into a situation similar to this."

The district began implementing the fee two years ago in a move it says prevents fire station brownouts.

But in this case, McLaughlin says he'd like to see the fee waived.

"There is a mechanism for appealing this. a mechanism for making this right. Our desire it to make it right," he said.

But for now, this heroic act deserving of a medal has Deanda facing a bill.

"I mean why would I want to stop to help somebody if I'm going to get a bill for $150?" he said.

Deanda plans to appeal and hopes the matter is resolved before it goes to collections.

i had almost the same thing happened to me when i was stationed in 29 palms ca . i came up on a car in the middle of nowhere desert. car had flipped and i pulled out a man about 45 years old. i put a tourniquet on his leg cuz he was going to die prob if not. his leg was crushed in the car. 2 days later i had cops at my door to arrest me. i was able to get out of it because i was a federal employee covered under some bullshit. true story. dont help anyone even if you are certified in your state to help.

That would be funny if they put you in federal prison for life for practicing medicine without a license. Meanwhile an 18 year old blaek kid opens up a practice pretending to be a gyno and I bet he's not in jail. http://www.sun-sentinel.com/local/palm-beach/fl-teen-doctor-arrested-again-20160302-story.html

I would walk right into the offices of this paramedic drop the bill on the floor and piss on it. everyone wants people to look out for fellow man, but when you do so, you get fucked for your trouble.

the main issue was me using a tourniquet. civilian medicine is limb over life . military medicine is life over limb. at the time i didn't know that

You weren't supposed to use a tourniquet because you were military? or the other way even to stop bleeding?

tourniquets are a military thing. you wont see an EMT put one on somebody. in the civilian world basically you would rather let somebody die than have them possibly lose a limb. but when i was fresh out of training i was all military and your goal is to get as many men back on guns as possible so if they have to lose a limb then so be it.

edit: didnt see your full question, they try to stop the bleeding by using a bandage or pressure they wouldnt crank down on a tourniquet in the civilian world

What is a fire station brown out? Can they literally not pay their electricity bills or does it mean something else?
