My Wife and I used H&R last year and paid $97 to file (in SouthWest VA). I went back to H&R block (Northern VA), and it took the guy about 30-40 minutes to do a joint filing. The bill jumped to $333 dollars. He told me that the $97 must have been a promotion or something.

I paid the $333, but I'm done doing business with them. I'll just go back to TurboTax.

    It got me curious.

I believe they scale their charges based on income and it's not an equal system. It's hard to quantify.
For those of you that use them (and want to answer)

What did you pay for the filing?
    How many W2's were involved?
How long did it take them to file?

Anyway- I'm so fucking pissed right now.
It's such a shady business model, because you don't know the Bill until the end, so you go into it blindly. How is a jump from $97 to $333 a reasonable expectation?

    Fuck em.

    This is good advice.
Plus once you use it the first time it saves all of your info for the next year.
Saves a lot of typing and all you have to do is put your new numbers in and it's done.
It keeps your routing number there too so you hit send and if you are getting a return it goes right to the account you want it to.
    Easy and quick.

I went to eztaxreturn.com and did my own. They charged 40 bucks to file both state and fed.

Hmm, I did my girlfriends federal taxes on ez and it was free. They wanted to charge for the state but I printed out the form and did it the old fashioned way.

I did H&R Block online and it was $39 bucks only a state fee. Federal was free. And didn't even pay the fee told them to take it out of my return.

If you log on to ez through IRS.gov the federal part is free. If you log directly to ez they will charge you. Little bullshit tricks they play to get your money.

I found them through IRS.gov. The last few years I've just gone straight there. I'll have to try to remember that.

I'll tell you one thing you should never do.
Since you are in the No. Va. area I'm sure that you've seen these poor bastards that they dress up in the Statue of Liberty costume and stick out on a street corner with a sign for Liberty Tax.
They are so shady that this year Md. is refusing to process state returns done by them.
I know it's hard to believe that a company that is willing to send a crackhead in a cheesy costume out to advertise for them would do a shitty job, but it's true.

Both Federal and State were free thru Turbotax this year including direct deposit if you can use the EZ forms. I did my brothers taxes for him in about 15 minutes.
