    Conspiracy theory I heard about New Coke.
    It was never intended to be a success.
    The plan was to put it out and when people started freaking out and demanding "old coke" be brought back it would return...
    BUT with high fructose corn syrup Instead of sugar.
    Not sure of the validity but it totally makes sense

    Totally came here to say this, it might have backfired on Coke as the incident allowed Pepsi to gain signifigant market share and keep it ever since. Before that, Pepsi was literally a drink for black people.

    I never heard that about Pepsi. I have heard Cheetos referred to as "Reggie shrimp"

    I once worked for a crazy guy who was a close friend of Sergio Zyman (also crazy - the marketing genius behind New Coke) and during a wine-fueled, team-building night on the town, he told me that it was NOT an intentional move to revitalize Coca Cola at the start but once the failure became apparent, they decided to make the best of it by bringing back the "classic" variety. The real story is that they did crappy market research - when they did their taste testing (in which they were preferred Pepsi), it was all "blind" - they did not ask their loyal users how they would feel if their usual formula was taken away and that led to the rebellion. Market Research 101...if you're going to make a change that you actually announce, check with your user base first to make sure they're cool.

    This brand has an extreme emotional relationship with their consumers. Otherwise, you could;t get away with ads like this...

    True. It was maybe the most brilliant marketing campaign ever. Coca Cola was the lead story on the news for weeks. It was free commercials and everyone seemed to care.
