I'd have to agree, Russell was a great player on a great team, Wilt was a freak tho! to average 50 points a game is insane! I don't care how much bigger he was then his opponent! that's still a major feat!

It's weird seeing guys that tall reach his age. They usually don't make it to 82

Hell of a basketball player but not the most friendly guy. Played 18 holes of golf with him once and he said 4 words. After hole 5 I attempted to make friendly conversation and he just walked away. I got the hint and didn't even bother with the normal "nice putt" the rest of the round.

Although in his defense at his age he is probably done being nice to everybody who kisses his ass. He stands out and everywhere he goes people make comments. After 70 years that would get old.

they both impacted the game in ways that statistics cant begin to quantify....but to me the only talent in sports history that truly matches Wilt Chamberlain is Babe Ruth in the 20's....he was just that ridiculous

so Bill and the Celtics play a preseason game in Houlton,Me right? most random small town on the planet on the canadian border, and my grandfather goes and watches

after the game when the Celtics are leaving my grandfather got a second to talk to Bill and basically he told my grandfather that he'd be excited to see a preseason game too if he lived in this shithole...lol

so yeah that was when Bill was probably 26ish

Russell was great. Wilt was Babe Ruth. Averaged 50 f'n points a game once or twice. He was definitely 10 years ahead of his time. His problem was motivation. When the Knicks beat the Lakers in '70 after Willis Reed went downin game 5 Wilt had a monster game 6 to force game 7. With a useless Reed and much shorter DeBusschere guarding him he went AWOL and the Knicks romped game 7 to win the championship.

Haha. Yeah my story was from 5 years ago so maybe he has always been that way. Honestly I am a big boy and the silent treatment I can deal with but the way he treated people who came up on the turn or at the clubhouse was pretty astonishing. He was not kind and folks were just telling him how much they liked him. Why so angry when people are so nice to you? Although I do think he went through some pretty tough shit with white boys in Boston but shit that was 40 years ago. If people told me I was the greatest all day I might have a smile on my face. I can't even get that out of my wife and kids.

Well look at it this way; you played golf with the greatest defensive player of all time in arguably any sport....so there's that. You definitely trump me on that one, not many stories can top that

Nah the debate is if you do a "Mt Rushmore" of Boston sports do you pick Russell or Bird. Cant have both because Orr, Ted Williams, and Brady are locks.

Id take Russell over Bird but the problem is many people grew up with Bird in the 80's and didn't see Russell play. NBA wasn't popular back then. Then there's the whole racial component as well. Me personally Id take Orr off because I dont like hockey but he has to be there obviously.

You gotta check his stats. He scored an insane amount of points for defenseman. Greatest 2 way player because Gretzky didnt play defense.
