My friend is thinking about putting one of her sons on it. The kid is probably 15 or 16 and has been an under achiever thus far. The kid is really smart, but just can't focus on his school work when it needs to be done. Would ADD medication be helpful for someone like him?

I took it to counter some anti-depressants I was on a while back. It definitely helped me focus.

Probably worth it for your friend to give it a try.

I think you should go with the Dr.'s recommendation but adderalland ritalin are prescribed for just the situation you describe. you can't spell adderall without ADD

I hear a lot of bad things about it. I'm sure there's good things about it too. Thanks.

:jj: He's at that age where he's probably doing that without any help from medication.

Sounds like a great idea if "your Friend" doesn't want to take the time and be an actual Parent.

That's not true. They're great parents. They have two other kids as well. This kid just can't get things done.

American's in general want to believe that answers can come in the form a pill, that shit is just speed with a different brand name

Why not find out what motivates the kid and get him involved in things he likes. Exercise, sports, boy scouts whatever (not video games, TV or online shit)

There was no such thing as ADD 20 years ago it was called being a teenager

he's mid 40's now, and I'm not sure how long it's been out. :dontknow: I know my life would have went a lot smoother if he'd have been on it as a teen.

it's doctor recommended, but you know, it's a big decision to make.
I don't know the second part. I'm assuming it's probably both.

There are no magic pills. They can be useful though. Unfortunately ADHD medicines are not an exact science and experimentation is needed to find out which medication works the best at what dosage.

Also, doctors want to push medication so it's important to not to end up on a soup mixture of medications. What often happens is one medication will help one symptom and then a side effect arises so the doctor prescribes another medication for the side effect and so on and so on.

Another thing to remember is most ADHD medication is speed. These meds can cause "ticks." Ticks can end up being permanent.

I think they're concerned with the meds and its long term affect more than anything.
