Lost in the clouds: Your private data has been indexed by Google
Personal and Sensitive Data Discovered With A Few Simple Searches

Depending on how you've configured the device, your backup drive may have been indexed by Google, making some seriously personal information freely available online to anyone who knows what they're looking for. Using a few simple Google searches, CSO's Steve Ragan discovered thousands of personal records and documents online, including sales receipts with credit card information and tax documents with social security numbers. In all cases, the files were exposed because someone used a misconfigured device acting as a personal cloud, or FTP (File Transfer Protocol) was enabled on their router.

Looks like my porn stash and financial info is safe

I have worked with the IT folks to set up FTPs for clients to easily transfer data. Was not sure my home router could do something like that.

Most of my stuff is safely stored on flash drives.

Cloud storage is for suckers. Same as living off an ATM card.

Not denying the article, but I notice the sources of the data on that site all make their money by providing consulting services to big corporations. When they present survey data they neglect to mention that they surveyed the corporations for the causes of the exposures, and the corporations will never acknowledge their own culpability. the causes are always somebody else: their employees, the outside service provider, hackers, etc. it is never their internal risk people.

The guy have a public FTP setup. Really, any search engine could have indexed these files. It's his fault for not making his FTP secure.

Did you catch that thread a couple weeks back where a Shedder was trying to get his attorney to sue his cell phone carrier for not informing him cloud backups were auto-enabled?

Another Google hit piece with mis-leading title.

It should be called "If you don't have your devices and network set up properly you are risking your personal information"

The source of the article needs to scare their customers into buying their services. It's neo-jingoism.

Here's an idea: spring for $50 and buy an external hard drive of your very own to use as backup.

I've had externals that did nothing but sit on a shelf not fire up when I went to use them.
Lost 6 months worth of masters because I only relied on an external backup.

I now do three types of backup. Local PC, external and cloud.

Backblaze gives you unlimited storage for $5 a month or less and Amazon just lowered their price to match but you don't have as many options with Amazon.

Look - it's like this: ALL my tranny porn is stored on Pink Cloud.
I can access it without being on-line.
    Is that so wrong?

All I ever use are Western Digital Passports for external hard drives and Kingston Data Travelers for flash drives and I've never had a single problem with any of them.

Yea and you probably won't hopefully. But for $50 a year to backup any and everything I want as a triple security measure.. I'll take it.

My porn stash is on an external HD that's only connected when I use it. It's never connected for more than a few minutes at a time.
