Are we witnessing a downward trend here?
Honestly, X-Men Apocalypse was just okay and has taken in significantly less box office than was predicted in it's first weekend.
Now this is just my opinion, but if you rip away the IP (Intellectual property) from Civil War, Avengers and Avengers 2, what do you have as far as story? Not very much IMHO, I guess that's the thing I'm doing is thinking that without all of the marvel fluff added, could the movie stand on it's own merit? Here are the marvel properties that I feel had decent enough stories in them to draw a dime or 2:
    Capt America: Winter Soldier
    X-Men 1st Class
    Iron Man
    Guardians of the Galaxy
Everything else had more fluff than a Harry Reams movie and I think that casual film goers are losing their mojo for superhero films.
What's the solution? Better writing, or we might go back to a super hero movie every couple of years (or is that rightsizing the industry?)
    What do you guys think?

I'm looking forward to Dr Strange and the next Guardians of the Galaxy.

Hopefully they won't fuck up the Infinity Gauntlet adaptation.

Again, Marvel comics have always been about the stories. How the movies have strayed from that message is interesting to me.

The two biggest movies of the year in North America are Civil War and Dead Pool.

Not to get all movie nerd, but you have to differentiate between something like X-Men : Apocalypse and Captain America : Civil War. Both have entirely different creative teams behind them. 90% of the time Marvel Studios is hitting it out of the park every day, Robin. Fox Studios not so much. So you are obviously going to have some lame ducks just for the fact that the studio behind the movie doesn't know what the hell they are doing. Deadpool was a rare bird. Also looking forward to whatever Marvel Studios puts out, keep 'em coming.

EDIT: and as a comic book fan having lived through most of the 70's and all of the 80's/90's, where comic book movies were few and far between (and usually horrible), I'm not going to look a gift horse in the mouth.

but you didn't answer my question. Ripping away the IP, do the stories stand up?
I think some do, but definitely not Civil War or either avengers, even though they all 3 made boatloads of money.

That's a good point, Fox absolutely killed the Fantastic Four both originally, and with an even worse remake.

It's hard to believe that Marvel was on the verge of bankruptcy at one point, but now their comic books form the basis for :quote: high art :quote: in American cinema.

I'm probably the same age as you, and enjoyed comics as a teenager (primarily), but they are what they are, comic books. It's amazing to me that Hollywood is so creatively bankrupt that they have to keep going back to the well to such a juvenile literary form.

I think the market has been oversaturated with them.

They need to pull back and let demand build for them again.

Super hero movies, aside from a few Batmans, have always been and will be uninteresting popcorn fare for people looking to shut off their brains.
