I wandered into one the day thinking I might get a killer deal on a higher-end watch or maybe a PS3

Unless I missed something, I couldn't believe how high their prices were. Like I was paying close to full retail vs. the craigslist pricing I was expecting.

Same here, I have purchased several new pistols over the years. I've never bought anything used from them.

I've bought and sold at pawn shops. As well as Cash Converters (basically a franchise pawn shop).
It's a good place for stuff like DVDs (usually $2 each or something) and small appliances. Electronics are more expensive, but still not retail in my experience.
    I got a Garmin for $40 recently.

The few I've gone in the prices have been too high and I found em unwilling to haggle.

I regret that I have extensive knowledge of pawn shops. They want to "loan" you about 20% of what your item is worth, charge an insane interest rate (really should be illegal, same with "payday loans"), and when/if you default they try to sell your old used shit at brand new retail prices. The only "bargains" to be had in pawn shops as a buyer, are DVDs, as Dev mentioned, and stuff they somehow don't understand the value of (which is VERY rare nowadays), AND broken items that you know you can repair. For instance, I got a DVD player years ago that was $5 because it didn't work. It just had a bad solder joint, so I got a good deal. Another time, I got a Fender Twin Reverb for about $150 because it didn't work...The dumb-fucks didn't notice half the tubes were missing, so I scored a Helluva deal....Very seldom have I been able to haggle any price down.

ProTip: Your best chance at finding a bargain is some hole-in-the-wall place like Uncle Jim's Pawn or something. They often do not have the resources to check current Blue Book values on everything in the world.... HOWEVER, you stand a much bigger chance of buying stolen merchandise that way, because the chains (Cash America, American Super Pawn, etc.) have policies of sending all serial numbers to the local area police departments to check for items reported stolen. The independents are not usually so nice about checking things out.....

I've bought things and sold things at pawn shops. I've been dirt poor without a penny to my name quite a few times in my life.

The funniest thing i ever pawned was a necklace that my parents gave me for Christmas. I could tell that they had re-gifted it to me. It wasn't my style and it was horrendously overpriced. It had to go.

I mainly bought VHS tapes when those still existed.

Yea, I buy DVDs there and Super NES games. I also intend to buy my Keurig there... they tend to have em for $60-80. I think the $40 I spent on the GPS was good. It's only 2 years old or something. But I happen to know they only give you like $8 or something if you go to sell em one (my sister's friend tried that).

Electronics, no... I wouldn't bother. Checked out their Nintendo DSs and was like "fuck you- I can get one for that price at Game Stop."

I like the small, city places too because they're privately owned and DO have more ability to haggle/less access to values, etc.
And I don't give a shit if the thing's stolen. :jj:
If I can get a good deal on something wgaf... all part of the "circle of life" in urban areas.

MY kid is still too young to care if she watches a DVD or VHS so I buy em there all the time... for like $.25 or something. :jj:

I recently took my engagement/wedding rings to get prices but unfortunately gold is worth more than platinum right now so Imma' wait it out. The price they told me was just not worth it.
