HBO will offer a stand alone streaming service (AKA Netflix). While Hbo will still lick the taint of the cable companies, other cable providers such as showtime and ESPN might not be far behind. I think this might also effect ala carte in cable as well.
Howard related, because he is the self-proclaimed king of all media.

He said the service is aimed at the 10 million people in the U.S. who subscribe to broadband, but don’t watch television.
“That is a large and growing opportunity that should no longer be left untapped,” he said. “It is time to remove all barriers to those who want HBO. So, in 2015, we will launch a standalone, over-the-top, HBO service in the United States.”
Mr. Plepler declined to provide any more details, including price, citing competitive reasons, but said he would “work with our current partners” – meaning the cable and satellite companies that currently distribute the premium pay-TV channel.
“This is the most exciting inflection point, both domestically and internationally, in the modern history of HBO,” he added.

I'll be curious to see how this spins out. There's a lot of money out there trying to prevent a la carte.

And since, sports is the driving factor behind all TV equations, a la carte might get a chance.
