A helicopter crashed today near the USS Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

Five people, including a family of four, were on board the single-engine helicopter, the Pali Momi Medical Center said, including a 15-year-old boy who was in critical condition following the crash. The Honolulu Emergency Services Department had earlier said the boy was 16.

Two other members of the family were taken to Pali Momi Medical Center in stable condition, according to a spokesperson. The fourth member of the family was treated at another hospital and released.

Does anyone here fly a helicopter and can you explain how that happened? I don't know much about them. I've heard they are more dangerous and difficult to fly than planes (which makes sense since they can't glide).

I'm not a pilot but I've worked around helicopters. You could hear it throttle up as it started to lose lift. Could be a mechanical issue or possibly too much weight...even pilot error. There are so many mechanical possibilities that it would be hard to speculate. Helicopters come down hard like that more often than people think..

    1) (Most likely) lost engine power and attempted an auto rotation. Helicopters can glide to a landing without power, however, the rotor RPM has to be carefully managed. From the video it looks like the pilot did not have enough rotor inertia to slow the descent.
    2) Vortex ring state- aerodynamic stall of the main rotor.

Is there anything worse than the prospect of drowning in four feet of water?
