I really didn't want to bother you guys with this but I have no other avenue to turn to and I know I can get good advice here. I usually enjoy researching purchases to get the best deal but with this I'm way out of my league.

My parents are old and their computer sucks. Dad likes to buy old tools on craigslist and mom shops on QVC. They have one of those little apple cube computers; the POS is probably almost 10 years old. It's so slow that it takes 60 seconds to type "NFL" into google. They don't seem to mind too much put it pains me to see it.

I'm not tech savvy at all. They don't need something blazing fast but I'd like to get them something decent in the $3-400 range that will last. No more apple, I'd prefer a PC. If any of you good people know your shit and can steer me towards a good deal for a desktop I'd be grateful.

    Thanks!

See if you have one close to you. They have internet bargain prices in a box store. The one in Denver is like a nerds paradise.

Other than that, if you have money in hands, keep an eye out of amazon or newegg.com

If they only do web browsing and the like, a Chromebook or tablet is an option. Other than that I'd suggest a laptop with an i3 and at least 8 gig of ram. If they do any kind of real computing, an i5 might be in order.

I gotta agree with dat. They don't need to run no stinking Office stuff anyways.

That said, routinely check the frontpage stuff on slickdeals.net. Register and setup an alert on any keyword. Better yet, install their app on your phone. Sometimes you have to be real quick as the sale is only for a few hours. Some deals are so fking lamb like you have to align the stars to get the pricing. In those cases, you have to gamble on waiting for the no of thumbs up versus the deal running out.

I'm thinking since they are older they would like a big ass monitor so a Chromebox would be the better option. Not portable like a laptop but that's not what they had anyway. I own this one and it works great. Price can't be beat if you already have a keyboard and monitor.

Get something with at least 128gb of solid state drive memory and install windows on that. Blazingly fast startup.

My first home computer was an 8086 with 256k ram 20 meg hd and an EGA graphics card.

    That was 1989.

I'm the sole unpaid tech supp for my and her family. I would occasionally just buy on my own coin and install replacement parts to fix their stuff up, bad chips, bad hds, restore, reinstall, reconfig. Some family members are just downright unappreciative and hints at 'perhaps the thing you did didn't work' as they sit frustrated for me to show up on a free weekend. For those I'm "just too busy". Coincidentally, it's her family side that is tactless. Mine thanks me profusely.

Thank you so much.. I'd never even heard of a chromebox before but that's probably what I'll go with. I'll check them out more in the AM when I have some time.

    Really appreciate the help!

Mine was a Leading Edge, 8088 I think, with 5.25" floppy and a 20mg hd. It sat for a while as I had no more money to buy any software.

I fix stuff for family over the phone sometimes. I can't stand phone support. It's like, is the computer plugged in?
