So I got a job offer Friday from a not-a-big-name company for a decent amount of money.

And I was about to take it.

Then, moments ago, I got a job offer from a famous, semi-powerful person to work for a very well-known company for a not-so-great amount of money. Actually, a really pathetic amount of money.

So my question is: What should I do?

Well, obviously I'm going to go where the money's at. But is that the wrong thing to do? Should I go with the big-name company. And trust me: This is a big name! I'd get to boast that I work for this big name, for this famous person.

Or should I go for the small company that's only been around for a few years, which really wants me. And is willing to pay me more.

Depends upon how many opportunities are available for you in the current job market. If pickings are slim and the smaller company is stable (in other words: do you think it'll be around in 5 or 10 years), then go for the money.

If your career history lacks a big name and you think it'll be smarter for you to earn less for a few years and then split if they don't talk turkey, then that might be smarter.

But overall? It's a good place to find yourself in.

Depends on how much more money you'd get at the small firm and the chances that they'll go out of business in the next few years before you can add them as a significant part of your résumé.

Well is there room to advance at the big-name company? If you can bust your ass for a year or two and be making what you would make at the smaller company, it be worth it. But to just work at this company just to brag about it when you're making pathetic money, would be stupid.

I should add that I've basically said "screw you" to the smaller company three times.

And they've been pursuing me like a motherfucker. They're very accomodating.

To reiterate: The money job sounds like a lot more fun.

But the lesser-paying job is more prestigious.

Damn: I think I'm going to actually e-mail this famous person back and turn down the offer.

    I mean, it's insulting.

When I say pathetic, I mean pathetic.

But dang, I had a high regard for this person.

    And he throws me peanuts?

Not if the title at the new job is one that would look awesome on his résumé.

I wish I could tell you who this famous person is....he's a few degrees separation away from Howard (but they don't know each other).

Obviously your worth is more that what this famous person is willing to extend to you. I suggest you go where the money and fun are. Piece of mind regarding liking your job, your self-worth and being able to pay your bills far outweigh the ability to say "I work for so-and-so" when in reality they don't pay shit.
