Hey all you gunslingers, is this even remotely possible?

Ohio freak death: Man fires gun into air, bullet travels over a mile and kills 15-year-old Amish girl

"FREDERICKSBURG, Ohio — A man cleaning his muzzle-loading rifle shot the gun into the air, accidentally killing a 15-year-old Amish girl driving a horse-drawn buggy more than a mile away, a sheriff said Tuesday."

    http://www.nydailynews.com/news/nat...kills-15-year-old-amish-girl-article-1.994626

How can a bullet maintain the necessary velocity to puncture a skull after traveling 1.5 miles?

    Dang.

Imagine how many dune coons die whenever a soccer goal is scored or tin-pot dictator is disposed of.

Hunter said earlier there was no indication the shooting was related to a rash of beard-cutting attacks against Amish men in a feud over church discipline.

Still, the mystery of the shooting in the wake of the beard-cutting attacks had left the Amish shaken and "on pins and needles," Zimmerly said.

It just gets more bizarre by the minute :jj:

It's all about the velocity as it leaves the rifle. Regardless of the angle fired, the bullet will have the same velocity as it reaches the surface of the Earth again minus the small amount lost by air friction which isn't much for a spherical bullet. It does happen.

Law of conservation of energy. Whatever kinetic energy the bullet has at any given altitude going up will have the same kinetic energy coming down at the same altitude except for the small amount lost by friction. If the bullet has enough energy to penetrate a skull ten feet away it will still have enough energy a mile and a half away.

    Umm, no.

    Gravity is a constant.

You think a rocket ship that goes up at a certain speed, crashes at the same speed? Go back to Kindergarten, dude.

Also muzzle loaded just means it is loaded from the front like a cannon or artillery instead of the rear like a shell loaded gun. They can most certainly travel more than a mile and a half in the air. It doesn't mean revolutionary war musket.

Yes it is possible. Unlucky but possible. It would not come down with the same velocity making it unlikely to kill a person.
