LONDON (AP) — A Gerhard Richter painting owned by Eric Clapton has sold for 21.3 million pounds ($34.2 million), handily beating pre-sale estimates and setting a new auction record for the German abstract artist.

Sotheby's auction house says Richter's "Abstraktes Bild" sold to an anonymous buyer Friday in London, ending a more than five-minute bidding competition between two telephone buyers.
The 1994 abstract oil on canvas piece from guitarist Clapton's collection was expected to sell for between 9 million and 12 million pounds.
Friday's sale handily beat Richter's previous auction record of $21.9 million set in May in New York with the sale of his "Abstract Picture (7938-3)."

There's a reason people call him "God".

I don't know what Eric paid for it but apparently he made a huge profit. If the the projected price was $9-12 million pounds that means that Eric paid way less than $9 million pounds for it. Art is a better investment than Real Estate or the Stock Market, of course that isn't saying much. If you are an astute judge of art or have a sharp advisor it can be a great investment. The Sunday Times in the UK estimated his wealth to be $195 million in US dollars in May of this year. Their estimate is probably low.

I still for the life of me can't understand why people ever fussed over Clapton. I've heard every record he's made and I'm still looking for the magical recording that sets him far and above the long list of great guitarists. What I call great are the ones that either created their own unique sound or play and make songs far beyond what others can create. Just like the generic answer about the greatest rock drummer, everyone blurts out John Bonham. If Stewart Copeland and Neil Peart never made music, I could agree, they would play Bonham off the stage.

Yeah, I never thought he was that great. Better songwriter / singer than a guitar player.

Considering Layla is one of the top 100 rock songs of all time I would beg to disagree with you. Rolling Stone has Clapton as the 4th greatest guitarist of all time behind, Hendrix, Duane Allman and BB King.

Layla is a good song, BUT, look who Clapton recruited to sit in and then join in! Duane Allman worked on that album and played slide on layla.

So true. That Derek and the Dominoes album was fantastic and I bet most of that praise has to do with Duane!

I really agree with you about Clapton. Even other players from his era that played the same genre are better (to me).

John Bonham was really revolutionary in his time. His drumming changed the game. It was something new and different, bombastic, in your face and bad-ass. Just like the rest of Led Zeppelin.

Kinda reminds me of this grammy winning classic:

Anal Cunt - Your Kid Committed Suicide Because You Suck

    [Chorus:]
Eric Clapton sucks, Eric Clapton sucks
Eric Clapton’s gay, and he’s fucking gay

Your father is the 4th worst singer
    After Springsteen, Seger, and Petty
You were sick of his gay fucking songs
So you jumped out a really high up window

    [chorus]

Your father sucks so fucking bad
You knew you’d get beaten up at school
You were sick of hearing “You Look Wonderful Tonight”
So you jumped out a really high up window

    [chorus]

I almost wish you didn’t die
Because I hate the song “Tears In Heaven”
I was glad you died until I heard that song
    And Kevin Sharp is gay

...thing is tho clapton is a guy thats one of the ground floor architects of an unsurpassed era of rock. monumental shit going back to early 60s playing for 'traffic' even bands before that. the one that all the greats admired was jimi hendrix they all use to go watch him play, they wanted to be like jimi.

Oh, Layla is a great song but all that good guitar playing is Duane.
