one of my coworkers built 2 of these for his stall at work (mechanic) and they work awesome.

I think I'm going to make one (with the solar panel) for car camping. :bigthink

Would it still be significantly more economical than a window AC unit if the fan is plugged into an outlet as opposed to a solar panel or a battery?
    I guess so, right?

Do AC units for windows use toxic chemicals that harm the environment? Or am I just thinking of outdated freon or something? And I know those units can really jack up your electrical bill.

In any case, these thing are so cool. This would be something I would be tempted to do, just for the hell of it. :)

Oh hell yes. It's just a 12 volt DC fan. You could run it for ever on a motorcycle battery and a trickle charger, but that solar panel is dirt cheap through Harbor Freight.

Yeah, freon is a toxic chemical for sure. It's more for fun and for portability than anything else... perfect for tent camping in the summer.

You could only cool off a small room but it's basically meant to sit in front of you and blow right on you.

Oh that sounds like such a good idea for camping. Sometimes out here even the nights are warm. It would be a luxury in a tent for sure.

And it's 12 volt... just like your car battery so you could use a 12 volt adapter (cigarette lighter socket) in your car to power it (or keep it charged) indefinitely.

It'd also be SO easy to spend an extra $15 and an extra hour and you could make it way more efficient.

Heck, even I could do the first one if I had the right size drill attachment. I know my PVC, I know 5 gallon buckets and certainly styrofoam containers. A fan and a frozen milk jug, done deal pal. :p

Oh, and the solar equipment or battery needs. :D

I'm thinking about watching Craigslist for a cheap (beat up) large plastic cooler and a window fan.

I don't really care about the 12 volt part.

That thing would be useless in Florida.
